Revitais yet another indie game going into the roguelike genre. Players are stuck in a time loop wherein they wake up on a subway train every time they die. The biggest difference with this story is that it follows a young child. The opening cutscene shows this kid crying, which is heartbreaking.

Is he stuck in this netherworld forever or is there a way to escape? It’s up to the player to help this child through this seemingly never-ending nightmare. That’s the basic premise forRevita, but there are a lot more things players should know before they start playing the game.

8Change The Buttons Around

The first thing players are going to want to do is change the controls around. For Switch users, the jump button is automatically assigned to the trigger buttonson the controller. This can make the most basic function ofRevitadifficult.

Switch the jump to the B button to make it feel more natural. It might also be a good idea to switch the dash/dodge button to the Y button and to make the right stick shoot as well as aim. These changes should make all the difference in a dungeon.

7Check Out The Assist Options

There are not aplethora of assist optionsinRevita, butplayers should be aware of the ones that are included. Damage can be decreased up to 50%. Conversely, ifRevitais proving to be too easy for the hardcore players out there, the damage can be increased up to 200%.

There is also an aim assist option, but it doesn’t seem to work reliably. Switching the right stick to aim and shoot is as good as it gets. However, this might get fixed in a patch, so it might be worth turning on just in case.

6Souls Can Disappear

Souls are one ofthis game’s currencies. Once an enemy dies, they will release their soul to be collected. Collecting them will charge a meter and players will start with two bars. This can be increased in various ways in a dungeon. Certain relics can do this, for example.

Using one charge will heal part of the player’s health. It’s important to note that souls can disappear. Sometimes a curse will make them disappear even faster. Basically, don’t waste souls.

5When To Open Cursed Chests

A giant purple chest will appear right before the boss room on every floor of the dungeon. These chests are cursed. Players will get a good item out of them, but it will come at a cost. Sometimes curses won’t be that bad; other times, they can be detrimental like draining health as long as an enemy is onscreen which is a big crutch ina boss battle.

Don’t open these chests unless on the verge of death. If it looks like you won’t survive the boss encounter anyway, take a gamble. Things may surprisingly turn out for the better.

4Predicting Enemy Movements

Every enemy inRevitahas a tell when they are about to act. It may take some practice, but learning them will become second nature in due time. Thisis a roguelikeafter all and the whole idea behind them is like being stuck in a time loop.

Revita’s trickier enemies are the bosses, which is true for most games. It’s also a good idea to note that the player can cling to walls. Don’t forget to use walls as an advantage in battle.

3Don’t Go For Those Extra Hearts

Hearts are another currency inRevitaalong with being the player’s health. The aforementioned charges can be used to heal and they can also make new hearts if health is full. The more hearts players have, the stronger they will become.

However, it takes four charges to make a new heart. Since players have to be in full health every time to make a new heart, it may not be worth using that many charges. It might be a better idea to keep the meters charged so that players can heal whenever they want. Like the cursed chests, it’s a real gamble. Luck is abig part of roguelikes.

2Look Out For Secret Walls

Players may not discover this until they do it by accident: sometimes rooms can have secret walls on either side. It’s easy to tell when a wall can be destroyed if it blinks with one hit. Keep shooting and it should fall. Bigger weapons, like the rocket launcher, should destroy these walls in a single hit.

It may feel monotonous to test every wall before taking the elevator out of a room, however, it is worth the time investment. The more items players can gather in a run, the better and these secret rooms usually have good loot.

1Returning To The Station

There is an option in the menu that will allow players to return to the station. In some roguelikesand other games in general, returning to the hub area allows players to keep everything they have collected up to that point. That is not true forRevita.

Choosing this option in the menu will not even warn players that this will happen. In-between floors, there will be a save point. Using this will allow players to quit the game and then restart it at that point, keeping all progression. That method does work.
