For example, the Armor Titan is famous for its super hard armor, while the Colossus Titan can dominate the land due to its sheer size alone. But what are the things that actually determine the strength of these titans?
Well, there are actually quite a few variables that contribute to the overall strength of a titan. But before we go any further, let’s make a distinction first. The Titans that we’ll talk about here areThe Original Nine Titans that comes from the Titan Shifters, not the mindless Titans that can be found roaming around the Paradis Island. With that being said, here are some of the things that can determines the strength of a Titan.

The Types of The Titans
As mentioned above,there are nine special Titans in the series, each of them are unique in their own way, and are suitable for certain tasks. you’re able to use them on any other job, but they will work and thrive in their specific field. By the way, even within the same Titan family, different shifters may have different forms of Titan, but the overall ability should remain the same.
Founding Titan, Attack Titan, and Female Titan specialized in close-range attacks.The Founding is a commander that can order every titan, while the Attack Titan has a bigger raw power than the other two, but the Female Titan has greater agility and flexibility of them all. Armor Titan and War Hammer Titan specialized in creating hardened materials for mostly close-range attacks, but one focuses on creating armor to protect its body, while the other can craft all kinds of melee weapons.
Jaw Titan and Cart Titan have superior agility and mobility compared to the others, with one specialized in snatching its prey on the move, while the other can carry heavy loads on its back. Beast Titans have the biggest variety of forms depending on its shifters, but they are generally specialized in long-range attacks. Last but not least,Colossus Titan can wreak havoc to its surroundings, be it through its sheer size and power alone, or by using its scorching steam.
So as you can see,all Titans are strong in their own way. Some are strong in the close-range attacks, while others specialize in mobility or long-range attacks. But when it comes to versatility, then the Founding Titan and the Attack Titan have a clear edge over the others.
The Skills and Creativity of The Shifters
While the type of the Titan determines its innate physical power, what can enhance a Titan combat ability is the shifter’s actual skills and abilities. For example,Eren’s Attack Titanshould have superior physical ability over Annie’s Female Titan. However, since Annie is an expert in martial arts, he can dominate Eren in a duel and dictate the pace and intensity of their fights.
Other than skills, creativity is also an important part of a Titan’s strength. In some cases, it’s even more important than the innate power of the Titan itself. For example, Eren’s Attack Titan should be able to beatZeke’s Beast Titanin a boxing match, but since Zeke loves to play catch, he used his throwing skills and the superior flexibility of the Beast Titan’s limbs as some sort of catapult that can launch debris at a high speed. Therefore, making it nearly impossible to get close to him unscathed.
Just like in real life, somebody who is skillful and creative can beat an enemy that is physically stronger than him. That is why Eren who simply uses his brute strength in the early part of the series isgetting beaten to a pulp by the other titans. But when he learns some combat skills and starts to come up with ideas to improve his winning chance, that is when he can finally defeat the other Titans.
The State of Mind of The Shifters
When it comes to the things that determine the strength of a Titan, there is one other variable that is often overlooked by most people. The state of mind of the shifters. Because no matter how powerful the Titan might be, and no matter how skillful and creative the shifters actually are, none of those matterwhen the shifters themselves are in a bad state of mind. On the other hand, a certain state of mind can also increase a Titan’s combat prowess. So this seemingly simple thing is actually incredibly impactful to the overall strength of a Titan.
For example,Eren usually uses his anger as the fuelthat allows him to break through any obstacles and keep charging head first onto his opponents without a care in the world. That is especially true in the early parts of the series. Needless to say, this anger can increase his explosive power and enable him to tolerate more pain, which makes him rather difficult to deal with. However, it also makes his movements rather sloppy, which prevents him from noticing or reacting to any surprise attacks, which is such a fatal weakness during a combat.
Another obvious example isReiner’s desperation and submissive attitudeduring his fight against Eren after the time skip. He is so overcome with guilt and grief to the point that his armor becomes so brittle. What used to be an impenetrable armor has been reduced to mere paddings for Eren’s punches. All because Reiner is not in a good headspace at the time. So yes, the state of mind is definitely an important part of a Titan’s Strength. So to summarize, a strong Titan is a Titan that is specialized in combat, with skillful, creative, and calm shifters at the helm.
