Coming just in time for Christmas, newBaldur’s Gate 3developer Larian Studios has released a brand new video to celebrate the season within the game. Dropping on December 24th, the new video is a happy, little carol all about the impending, Lovecraftian nightmare that is theMind Flayer infection inBaldur’s Gate 3, with a bit of a dark turn through the otherwise cheery song.
TitledTadpole for you, tadpole for me, the song follows a familiarBaldur’s Gate 3cinematic of a man being transformed into a Mind Flayer after being infected by one of the titular tadpoles, but with a few festive features added to the video. Additionally, the performers also appear throughout the scene, with implications that some of them are also succumbing to the Mind Flayer transformation.

The performers of this musical number are none other than the developers at Larian Studios themselves, all seeming to have recorded their respective parts from home, complete with festive decorations strategically placed in each shot. Seeing as how much ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s developmenthas been taking place remotely due to social distancing measures, it’s little surprise that this little Holiday treat had to be created similarly. As a result, the carol winds up having a similar feel as the Celebrity fueledImaginevideo, only with a more gaming related flare and less deserving of the same level of ridicule.
In addition to showing the developers all singing through their parts, sometimes in drastically different tones as the song moves from a charming carol to a heavy metal riff, some new visuals were added to the cinematic. However, rather than fully render a new Seasonally themed scene, a few Holiday items have been overlaid on top of the visuals, including a Christmas tree made out of handprints, some fireworks, and a cartoonish Santa hat. The result is that theBaldur’s Gate 3carolcomes off as a comical little project to please fans during the season, and maybe give players a little taste of new content as they wait for the game to come out of Early Access.
This whole experience is a fun little romp, especially forfans ofBaldur’s Gate 3and its twisted storyline and sometimes dark humor, as well as a humanizing moment for Larian Studios. Oftentimes, the player developer disconnect leads fans to see something like Larian Studios as a name that grinds away and a few months or years later, a hit game pops out. However, its these personal types of outreach that can help bridge that divide and ultimately lead to a better gaming experience as a result.
Baldur’s Gate 3is available now in Early Access on PC and Stadia.
