Summary
Blue Beetledirector Angel Manuel Soto has big plans for the franchise, including who wants to play Ted Kord in the DCU.
During its opening weekend,Blue Beetleearned only $25 million at the domestic box office and grossed $43 million at the worldwide box office, making it one of the worst opening weekends for aDCfilm. However, it is outpacing whatexperts predictedBlue Beetlewould earnfor its domestic box office run. The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences, hopefully boosting it for the rest of its theatrical run.

In an interview withThe Digital Fix, Soto was asked who he would want to play Ted Kord in a potential sequel. “My dream cast for Ted Kord has always been Jason Sudeikis,” Soto said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about who’s best for the character, who loves what we’re trying to do. And who’s willing to see Jaime Reyes’ story continue.”
Sudeikis is known for his many comedy roles and as the titular character in Apple TV’sTed Lasso. It is not clear if Sudeikis is interested in the role of the original Blue Beetle, but one clue in the film could suggest that Soto had this dream casting in mind for a while. Although no actor plays Ted Kord in the film,Blue Beetle’s mid-credits scenehas an audio clip of Ted Kord from an unknown actor, and earlier in the film, there is a painting of him that seems to resemble Sudeikis.
Most fans seemingly agree Sudeikis would make a great Ted Kord, but Soto did make it clear in the interview that what’s most important is casting someone who can best help Jaime Reyes. This likely means Ted Kord will take on a mentor role and won’t be the lead character in any movie or series, and the actor would need to be a good fit for that. His role would likely resemble Michael Douglas as Hank Pym in theAnt-Manfranchise.
Although the film is off to a rough start at the box office, James Gunn has already promisedBlue Beetle will play a large part in the DCU. Additionally, with aBooster Goldseries on the slate for chapter 1 of the DCU, Ted Kord will likely appear in the DCU.
