Summary
PlayStation 5 players will soon gain access to a former day one Xbox Game Pass title,The Last Case of Benedict Fox. Launching earlier this year to solid reception,Benedict Foxis a 2D action platformermetroidvania which follows the lovecraftian story of a detective who’s linked to a demon.
The Last Case of Benedict Foxhad a lot going for it as a day one Xbox Game Pass title prior to being released. Its combat and art style was reminiscent of Xbox’s own popular andhighly regarded 2D metroidvania duologyOri. That said,Benedict Fox’s release date did it no favors in terms of garnering buzz, as it launched a week after the very long awaitedDead Island 2and just one day beforeStar Wars Jedi: Survivor. With Xbox’s ownRedfallhaving launched the very next week in early May,The Last Case of Benedict Foxseemed to have mostly flown under the radar, even as a day one Game Pass title.

Now, development studio Plot Twist has released a new trailer announcingThe Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition’sarrival on PlayStation 5. This enhanced version of the game will feature improved visuals and enemy AI, as well as faster combat, among other upgrades. While unconfirmed, it’s likely that these improvements will also come to the Xbox version in the form of an update simultaneous to the game’s PS5 release. That said, no release window has been given for this PS5 launch ofBenedict Fox,as it’s only been stamped with a “Coming Soon.”
It’s a common occurrence for some smaller third party Xbox Game Pass titles to make their way to PlayStation later on down the line, and vice versa. This year saw some of 2022’s Game Pass console exclusives hit PlayStation like Jumpship’sSomervilleand Squanch Games’High On Life, the latter of which made a huge splash when it launched on Game Pass last December. Conversely, some of PlayStation 5’s console exclusives have also been landing on Xbox as of late, like the puzzle gameMaquetteand theaction platformerSolar Ash. It’s great to see some of these smaller games having the chance to grow a new audience on a second platform, especially if they initially flew under the radar.
WithThe Last Case of Benedict Foxnow confirmed to be coming to PlayStation 5, the title also seems like a perfect candidateto also land on Nintendo Switch. As a 2D action platformer,Benedict Foxis right in line with the flavor of indie games that typically seem to thrive on Nintendo’s platform, and since it’s not too graphically intensive it seems like a potential Switch port would be a no-brainer. AsBenedict Foxawaits its second wind on PlayStation 5, it’ll be interesting to see if it’ll be able to capture a larger audience on a new platform.
The Last Case of Benedict Foxis available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. A PS5 version is in development.
