It’s been two years sinceDeltarune, the surprise spiritual successor to the groundbreaking indie darlingUndertale, launched its first chapter for free on PC and Mac. The game, which was created byUndertalecreator Toby Fox, launched its first chapter on Halloween night in 2018, and now, after almost three years, Fox has announced that the second chapter of the ambitious oddball RPGDeltaruneis coming later this week.

Deltaruneis a spiritual successor toUndertale, which the game’s title is an anagram of.Undertalefirst launched in September 2015 and became an instant modern classic, often regarded by many as one of the best indie games ever made. The game features similar visuals and character designs to its predecessor, however Deltarune is a more ofa traditional RPG with a battle system similar to theFinal Fantasyseries, as opposed to itsUndertale’s more simplisticEarthbound-inspired battle system that rewarded avoiding combat through dialogue options similar toShin Megami Tensei’s demon conversation mechanics. Much likeUndertale,Deltarunehas been highly praised for its writing, which effortlessly blends humor with unforgettable characters.

After almost three years of waiting, Toby Fox announced duringa recentUndertaleanniversary live streamthat the next chapter inDeltarunewill arrive tomorrow, September 17th, at 8pm EST. Details of the release have not been revealed however it is expected that, much like the last episode, chapter 2 ofDeltarunewill be free for PC and Mac players and offer around 3-4 hours of gameplay. Aside from these, no other details are available regarding what content it will contain or if it will follow the characters featured in the first chapter. It also does not appear as though PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of chapter 2 will be made available until a later point.

As withUndertale,Deltarunehas been the subject of many theories and rumors considering the mysterious hints and teases Toby Fox is known for including in his games, meaning fans of the series are likely already preparing to tear the latest chapter apart looking for clues and hints for what it could mean for the overarching story presented inDeltarune. Upon releasing the first episode in 2018,Toby Fox released a message to fansclaiming that he intended to release the game as a full release when it was ready, making this second chapter episodic release seem somewhat unprecidented.Deltaruneis intended to have more than three chapters as Fox plans on expanding the game’s development team as the game’s development continues.
