Destiny 2is making itsWitch QueenDLC freely available for all players to access for a limited time, according to the latest in-game announcement. Often touted as one ofDestiny’s finest expansion packs,Witch Queenhas introduced a number of important elements to the game that ended up shaping the developer’s approach to the upcomingLightfallDLC as well, making the new offer particularly noteworthy.

WhileDestiny 2has certainly had its ups and downs over the years, last year’sWitch QueenDLC and its subsequent seasonal content stand out in Bungie’s long portfolio. Aside from its variety of powerful Exotic items and the addition of veritable weapon crafting, most players also agree that its campaign sits a notch above the usualDestinyDLC fare.

Anyone logging intoDestiny 2as of February 23 will be greeted with a message saying that one of its most critically acclaimed DLCs is going to be available for free until February 26. It’s worth pointing out that this comes almost exactly on theanniversary ofDestiny 2: The Witch Queen’s release date, which may have played a role in Bungie’s decision to make it free-to-play. Of course, the more important consideration here is that the majorLightfallDLC is due to launch on February 28, and the limited-time availability of the previous big chapter inDestiny’s narrative is sure to draw in a crowd. Xbox players can make use of this offer until February 26, 11:59 PST, with the deal wrapping up on PC and PlayStation on February 27, 9:00 PST.

While theWitch Queencampaign does pack quite the punch on its own, players concerned aboutDestiny 2’s upcoming difficulty increasemay wish to focus on the DLC’s Exotics, rather than the story itself. Notably,The Witch Queenhas featured a whole slew of top-notch Exotic gear, with items such as the Osteo Striga SMG and the Parasite grenade launcher being valuable additions to any arsenal. Any gear that players unlock before February 26 will stick around in their Vault and the Collection UI, making this a one-off opportunity that shouldn’t be ignored.

The year ofDestiny 2: The Witch Queenhad its issues, but most of them popped up as the year went on, as part of Bungie’s less-than-stellar execution of seasonal content. The DLC campaign and its related Exotic quests weren’t plagued with these problems, however, and free-to-playDestinyfans can now give the DLC a whirl before the next expansion pack comes out.

One of the most off-putting features ofDestiny 2, specifically, is the fact that franchise newcomers cannot experience everything the game previously had to offer. While there’s no way to replay old campaigns that got taken out of the game, aDestiny 2player created a narrative summaryexplaining all the important story beats that many players may have previously missed, providing important context for theWitch QueenDLC and beyond.

Destiny 2is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
