The following article contains spoilers forDexter: New Blood. The showdown between serial killers Dexter Morgan and Kurt Caldwell is inching closer and closer as each man tries to outsmart the other. Along with their ongoing rivalry, Chief Bishop works hard to prove that her old friend was murdered by Kurt, thanks in large part to Dexter’s forensic expertise. Harrison finds himself caught between Dexter and Kurt, uncertain of himself and who to trust more.
This episode is nostalgic of the original series in the sense thatDexteracts as a forensic investigator again while helping Angela analyze the corpse of her friend Iris, figuring out how she died and how her body was moved and placed in a cave. Dexter also continues to pursue Kurt’s movements to protect Harrison and contemplates over whether he will be the one to kill Kurt on his table, or if Angela is able to arrest Kurt for Iris’s murder.

Dexter And Kurt Are In A Battle Of Wits
Dexter is absolutely right when he says that the situation between him and Kurtis like a game of chessbecause each person is waiting patiently to see the other’s move. There are scenes in which Dex and Kurt are each surveilling others from their own car (Dexter watching Kurt in his diner; Kurt seeing Angela and Molly Park come out of the bar together). The significance of this is that Dex and Kurt can both be viewed as predators covering their tracks, but the main difference, as Dexter says, is that his main intention is to be a protector for his son, but will kill Kurt if he feels the need to do so.
Kurt is indeed covering his tracks very well, even clearing out the room in which he kept women in captivity. No camera, no bed, and no jacuzzi as the room is left completely bare when Dexter shows Angela the secret hideout. Even when Angela arrests Kurt for the murder of Iris, he doesn’t even flinch or panic. Kurt and Dexter also have a brief meeting in the diner, in which both killers have their eyes set on each other, but hide their inner rage with fake smiles and gestures.

Harrison May Be Becoming A Dangerous Person
Of course Dexter is no stranger when it comes to facing off against evil killers, but Kurt may be his most personal enemy since the Trinity Killer (who has a nice flashback sequence) because Harrison is the one caught in the middle of all the chaos and danger, and Dex doesn’t want his son to experience the horrors that he’s witnessed. However, as shown in the disturbing flashback scene, Harrison was the one covered in blood after Trinity killed his mother Rita, and now Harrison is working in the same place as a killer (Kurt). Harrison is very muchconflicted between two father figuresand mentors each trying to gain his trust, but the teenager is uncertain of who he should turn to for guidance.
Harrison does appear to try to reach out to Dexter more through simple gestures, such as thanking his dad for breakfast, or by opening up about his horrifying memories of his mom’s death. However, every time he tries to get close to his dad, or to Audrey (who he has grown to like very much), Harrison hesitates by cutting and running away because he doesn’t want to be judged, and is afraid of unleashing his anger to those closest to him, which is why he leans more toward Kurt and his aggressively masculine attitude. This shows how Harrison’s erratic behavior resembles Dexter because both men have “dark tendencies,” but Dexter has learned to control it over the years, while Harrison is still a work in progress.

Angela’s Investigation Opens Some Doors
Chief Bishop continues to show her toughness in not being taken for granted by anyone, including Dexter and Kurt while seeking justice for her old friend Iris. Not only does she suspect that Kurt is the killer, but she also hears his side of the story concerning his father and how he was a man who picked up women to rough around in his truck. There is an effective flashback sequencethat seemingly depicts Kurt’s father driving Iris in his truck until they argue and fight, and the sequence ends with Iris getting shot in the back with a rifle (reminiscent of how Kurt kills his female victims when they run away, signifying that his father, and Iris’s murder, inspired Kurt to kill young women). This flashback is intriguing because it matches Dexter’s description to Angela concerning how Iris died, but it also leaves Angela wondering whether it was Kurt’s dad, or Kurt himself, who murdered Iris.
Angela appreciates Dexter’s forensic genius in helping to identify Iris’s cause of death. However, she and Molly begin to notice Dexter’s suspicious behavior. Molly figures out that Dexter secretly recorded her conversation with Kurt and followed them to Kurt’s secret hideout, and Angela wonders why Dexter went to see Kurt at his diner before she arrested Kurt for Iris’s murder? This all points to both women possibly believing that Dexter is more than he says he is.
How will Angela and Molly react if they figure out Dexter is a serial killer, especially after all the help and support he’s given them? As for Kurt, he already knows Dexter killed Matt, thanks to the ashes Kurt saw in the sky the night he got drunk, andwhen he encountered the titaniumscrew that came from Matt’s leg. The odd part is that Kurt pretended to care about Matt’s disappearance, but in reality knew that his son was long gone due to his misdeeds, and wants Harrison as Matt’s replacement. This means Dexter and Harrison, along with the other key players (Angela, Audrey, and Molly) are all on Kurt’s hit list (especially now that Kurt seemingly has a trucker as his secret accomplice).
