One of ways Microsoft has been showing off next-generation graphical fidelity is throughForza Motorsport, revealed for Xbox Series Xduring the console’s game showcase earlier this month. However, another racing game that will be available for Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 which also stands out for its detail is Codemasters’DIRT 5, which put out a trailer showcasing what the simulator will be capable of.
TheDIRT 5trailer is simple, showing off work-in-progress footage of a two-minute time trial race around a new track called Stampede inspired by the Arizona buttes. According to the video’s description, 12 cars can compete in “extreme” Stampede circuits at a time, and the “unforgiving natural landscape” is evident as the truck skids through muddy turns and leaps off hills in third and first person.

DIRT 5’s availability as a free PS5 upgrade was leakedby a trailer earlier this month, but the main draw of yesterday’s upload is seeing just how pretty the game looks on next-generation hardware. In fact, one selling points listed in the video description is its “dynamic weather system,” shown by the environment changing throughout to reflect clear skies or lightning storms clouding the terrain.
On top of this time trial mode,DIRT 5will also have a fleshed-out career mode. It will have a “star-studded cast” according to representatives soon after the title was revealed at the Xbox 20/20 event, including Troy Baker as protagonist Alex “AJ” Janicek and Nolan North as antagonist Bruno Durand, bringing in talent from acclaimed story-driven video games likeNaughty Dog’sThe Last of UsandUnchartedseries.
Long-time fans of the arcade off-road racing franchise have a lot to look forward to based onDIRT 5’s graphics alone, even though next-generation versions will be released after its initial launch on current consoles this October. TheDIRT 5team is made up of former Evolution Studios employeeswho have worked on games likeDriveclubandMotorStorm.
Yesterday’s work-in-progress footage suggests the next-generation console versions ofDIRT 5will be worth the extra wait, however long it may take. It has the potential to stand alongside highly-anticipated titles likeGuerilla Games’Horizon Forbidden Westas beautiful examples of what upcoming games will be capable of.
DIRT 5will be released on July 10, 2025 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, later in 2020 on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and in 2021 on Stadia.
