Disney has made a number of movies based on rides from the Disney parks, includingThe Country Bears,The Haunted Mansion, and the wildly successfulPirates of the Caribbeanmovies. The latest in park ride films isJungle Cruise, based on one of the longest-running rides in the parks, and Disney has just dropped a brand new trailer for it.
Jungle CruisestarsDwayne “the Rock” Johnsonas a riverboat captain who finds himself taking a researcher, played by Emily Blunt, into the jungle on a mission to find a tree that is said to have healing powers. They along with her brother, played by British comedian Jack Whitehall, encounter risk, danger, and obstacles while sailing down the river. The movie also stars Edgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.

The trailer is action-packed, from the opening moments of Blunt and Johnson’s characters trying to outrun some men chasing them, to the last seconds of the riverboat sailing away from a crashing and burning building on the dock. Along with natural enemies including a leopard and rolling rapids leading into a waterfall, the adventurers encounter some supernatural dangers as well. The trailer offers glimpses of villains made out of snake-like vines and swarms of insects, fighting skeletons, and all sorts of other monsters.Plemons' brief trailer appearanceas some kind of villain in a submarine is also a highlight.
While theatres are opening in some countries all over the world, they are not open in all countries. In many countries, the audience capacity in theatres has been limited. This means that any theatrical release is a risk, even at this point in the pandemic where vaccinations are in progress in most places. Releasing a movie simultaneously on streaming, even with a fee, can help mitigate that risk for studios.
Jungle Cruiseisn’t the only Disney movie release this year to use this strategy.Raya and the Last Dragondid the same when it was released in March andCruellaandBlack Widowwill also do so upon release. It has yet to be seen whether this will become the norm for most major Disney releases, or if it’s only the result of extenuating circumstances.
JungleCruisewill premiere in theatres and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 21, 2025.
