Dwayne Johnson is returning to theFast and Furiousfranchise after vowing he would never do so. While fans might expect Johnson’s Luke Hobbs to return in theFast Xsequel or anotherHobbs and Shawmovie, Universal seemingly has other plans.
Johnson’s Luke Hobbs debuted in the fifthFast and Furiousfilm as a Diplomatic Security Service tasked with capturing fugitives Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker). However, he eventually teams up with Toretto and his Fast Family and becomes an ally in the sixth, seventh, and eighthFast and Furiousmovies. Johnson later helped spearhead a spinoff titledHobbs and Shaw, starring himself and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw. However, Johnson’s role behind the scenes and on-screen resulted in a feud with Vin Diesel, culminating inJohnson refusing to return for anyFast and Furioussequelsin the primary franchise.

However, Johnson’s stance changed when he appeared as Hobbs in aFast Xpost-credits scene. It would be reasonable to assume the post-credits scene was establishing Johnson’s return inFast X: Part 2or aHobbs and Shawsequel, butThe Wrapreports that Universal is actively developing aFast and Furioussequel that will continue the main franchise’s story by bridging the gap betweenFast XandFast X: Part 2. According to Johnson’s Instagram announcement, the newFast and Furioussequel will be a “Hobbs movie.” The script for Johnson’s newFast and Furioussequel was penned by Chris Morgan, who wrote six movies in the franchise and theHobbs and Shawspinoff.
Johnson and Diesel have seemingly settled their feud, as both will serve as producers on theFast and Furioussequel. Johnson will produce through Seven Buck Productions alongside company co-founder Dany Garcia and President of Production Hiram Garcia. Meanwhile, Diesel and Samantha Vincent will produce for their One Race Films production company. Additional producers include Chris Morgan for Chris Morgan Productions, Jeff Kirschenbaum for Roth/Kirschenbaum Films, and Neal Moritz for Original Film.
Plot details for theFast and Furioussequel were not divulged, but fans can reasonably assume the film will follow up on Dante’s (Jason Momoa) threat to target Hobbs for killing his father. As for who else will return for Johnson’sFast and Furioussequel? Details were not provided, but it wouldn’t be surprising if some of Toretto’s Fast Family appeared, even if they were only cameos.
WhileFast Xis a box office success, it’s arguably underperforming compared to some past installments. However, it seems Universal is undeterred and intends to move forward with even moreFast and Furiousmovies. Then again, perhaps bringing Johnson back is an attempt to renew arguably waning interest in the franchise.
