After a long drought,Dragon Ball Z: Kakarotfinally broke its silence about its upcoming DLC. In the months since the release of DLC 2, fans have been running wild with speculation about all the potential stories that the game could cover with its new story arc. Thedecision to adapt Future Trunks' timelineduring the Android saga is certainly a surprising one to say the least, but it wasn’t completely unprecedented. As it happens, there was an early leak back in May of 2020 that predicted this exact thing, although it seems that many fans misinterpreted the leak and came to the wrong conclusion.
The leak in question was found by Dmgaming (sent to him by a fan), aDragon BallYouTuber that coversDragon Ball Z: Kakarot,otherDragon Ballgames, and more. According to this, the third DLC would be called “Future Trunks Arc: HOPE!!.” Beyond this, not much was known about it, but it also led many fans to create incorrect theories about the final DLC of the season pass. Looking back, the signs were all there pointing towards this moment in Future Trunks' timeline, yet many still didn’t see this coming.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC 3 Leak Via Dmgaming
Dmgaming’s fan found this reference on a UK based online retailer called Fanatical, where DLC 3 was listed alongside the other two DLCs by name. Fans already knew that there would be a third DLC that was supposed to be longer than the two boss battles before it, but this was the first hint at what the new story arc might be about.DLC 3 was listed as “Future Trunks Arc: HOPE!!.”, which seemed to be a reference to episode 48 ofDragon Ball Super. This takes place duringSuper’s Future Trunks Arc and is also painted onto the side of Trunks' time machine.
Given that the first two DLCs both adapted stories fromDragon Ball Super, the natural conclusion was that this too must be referring toDragon Ball Super. Ironically, the leak was actually completely correct,DLC 3 is adapting stories from Future Trunks' timeline, but not the one that many fans expected it to. Instead of pushing the story further intoDragon Ball Super, DLC 3 is taking fans back to the Android Saga but from a different timeline. This means players will get to witness Trunks' struggle firsthand and see Future Gohan in action.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Pros and Cons of the Future Android Saga
Adapting the Future Android Saga was an interesting choice for Bandai Namco to say the least, and it comes with some pros and cons. On the one hand, this isn’t a story that has been touched on very much inDragon Ball. DespiteFuture Trunks being an insanely important character for theDragon Balluniverse, his struggles are often relegated flashbacks and the like. The History of Trunks TV special does tell this story, but aside from that it doesn’t get much representation.
On the other hand, fans do already know how this story will end.Gohan will end up losing to the Androids in the futureleaving Trunks all alone. As a result, Trunks will need to rely on his mother to build a time machine and go back to ensure that Goku survives the heart disease in the main timeline. Since all of that was already told in the base game ofDragon Ball Z: Kakarot, it remains to be seen how CyberConnect2 will make a compelling DLC out of this. It’s possible that it will make some changes, as it’s done so in the past with other DLCs.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - No More Super DLC?
This also has interesting implications for a potential second season pass. Both of the first two DLCs followed the path ofDragon Ball Super, although they also notably never went beyond theDragon Ball Zmovie. Rather than adapting the first two arcs ofDragon Ball Super, it could instead be seen as an adaptation ofDragon Ball Z: Battle of the GodsandDragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, both technicallyZmovies and not part ofSuper. If this is the case, then it may be that this third DLC is the final piece of add-on content that fans will be getting forKakarot.
DLC 3 has been referred to before as the finalDragon Ball Z: KakarotDLC, although it was unclear whether or not that meant on this season pass or forever. Many had assumed that DLC 3 would continueSuperand pave the way for a second season pass to cover the rest of the series, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Fans wanting to see Super Saiyan Blue Evolution Vegeta orUltra Instinct Goku inKakarotwill probably have to set those wishes aside for the time being.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Gohan and Trunks in DLC 3
There’s also something to be said for how the new DLC story will handle Future Gohan and Trunks. In this timeline, Gohan never learns how to access Super Saiyan 2, instead only ever reaching the first form of Super Saiyan. Likewise, Trunks eventually access Super Saiyan, but doesn’t reach Super Saiyan 2 untilafter the events ofDragon Ball Z’s Cell Saga. This means their characters may need to be modified a bit in the DLC sequences.
For Future Trunks, not much change will be needed. In the early scenes of the DLC when he is still a kid he will be unable to go Super Saiyan, but once he unlocks that power his character will be the same. Gohan, on the other hand, will probably start the story out in his teen form, and won’t learn the Super Saiyan transformation until he’s an adult. This means thatplayers won’t be able to use the Super Saiyan 2 or Ultimate Gohan forms in the DLC.
One could ask if it’ll cover enough of Trunks' timeline to eventually get to Goku Black, which would be interesting and make for a ton of fun content. However, for now, players will just have to wait and see how Bandai Namco handles this.
