SinceMortal Kombatunderwent a soft reboot in 2009, the franchise has seen an overall rejuvenation leading to new comics and films through Warner Bros. One of these films was 2020’sMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, an animated film from Warner Bros. Animation arm best known for its animated DC comics projects. It is set to receive a sequel inMortal Kombat Legends: Battle for the Realms, andMortal Kombatcreator Ed Boon told fans when they can see the next battle for Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revengefollowed the titular spectral ninja during the first Mortal Kombat tournament on his quest for vengeance against Sub-Zero for the deaths of Scorpion’s family and ninja clan.Battle for the Realmswill pick up shortly after and follow the events ofMortal Kombat 2as Shao Khan forces Earthrealms' defenders to fight in one final, all-or-nothing tournament in Outworld. Ed Boon took to his personal Twitter to share a first look at the upcoming movie with the official box art along with the film’s official release date. The cover featuresMortal Kombatmainstays Liu Kang, Raiden, and Sub-Zero front and center, meaning fans will get their first animated look at the second cryomancer ninja. As for the release date, the new animated film is set to drop on July 15, 2025.

Most of the original cast fromScorpion’s Revengeis set to return for the sequel, so fans will get to hear more ofJoel McHale’s Johnny Cagesnarky comments. However, Warner Bros. Animated isn’t being shy about filling out the cast of characters as Kung Lao, Stryker, Jade, and D’Vorah is confirmed to be fighting it out inBattle for the Realms.

Despite the overall rocky history for video game adaptations, the animated sequel can be seen as another positive step in producing more successful and popular adaptations to life.Mortal Kombat, itself, has seen just as rocky a history of adaptations on the big screen, alone, since the first 1995 film. While the 1995 and2021Mortal Kombatfilms were successful and popular among fans, they were met with mixed reviews from critics while 1997’sMortal Kombat: Annihilationwas a flop and panned by audiences and critics. That said, with Warner Bros. Animation at the helm and its history going back to 1993’sBatman: Mask of the Phantasm, it’s safe to sayMortal Kombatis in safe hands.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realmsreleases August 07, 2025.
