FromSoftware’sElden Ringis a widely popular game set in the beautiful open world known as the Lands Between and has definitely set itself up as a contender for game of the year. Fans are still raving aboutElden Ring’s mechanics, vibrant world, and cast of interesting, dynamic characters.
One ofElden Ring’s most beloved and popular characters isRanni the Witch. Ranni is an NPC with a full-blown quest line that results in the player obtaining the Dark Moon Greatsword, one of the more powerful weapons available in the game and across all of FromSoftware’s major releases. She is the daughter of Radagon and Rennala, both of which are also bosses that the player faces over the course of the game.

Redditor paultheboot, however, is less concerned with thelore surrounding Ranni the Witchand is more preoccupied with the spectral face that hovers next to Ranni’s real face. Paultheboot is seemingly seeing this ghostly face for the first time and is wondering if the visual was recently patched into the game, because they have never seen it before. However, scores of players in the comments are assuring them that the spectral face has always existed.
Of course, paultheboot is not the first to notice something inElden Ringseveral months after its release - the game is massive and there are so many characters and assets and settings that it makes sense that not everyone notices every little detail at the same time.Elden Ring’s list of activitiesand things to do apart from the main quest line is so long that players are spending hundreds of hours trying to complete everything they can. In the huge world that is the Lands Between, players come across secrets, puzzles, and other mysterious things each and every day.
The lore behindElden Ringis similarly vast and full of different twists and turns. The writers, in partnership with George R. R. Martin, love cyclical storylines, which could also be an explanation for Ranni’s spectral face. Ranni’s father, Radagon, departs and becomes Marika’s consort. At the end of Ranni’s questline, when her diminutive doll body is left behind and she regains her full-sized body, she thanks the player and also informs them that they are now her consort. This could mean that the spectral visage is actually Ranni’s true self possessing the doll body.
The lore inElden Ringis just another piece to a puzzle that players are still working together to solve. As shown by posts like this, Ranni the Witch is a mysterious part of that puzzle that confuses and fascinates players to this day.
