Final Fantasy 7 Remakewill allow players to take control of four of the main cast members: Cloud,Tifa, Aerith, and Barret. Each of these characters offers their own unique fighting style, and Barret has just received a new set of screenshots showcasing his.

Unlike Cloud and Tifa, who focus on close combat, Barret specializes in long-ranged attacks, making him similar toAerith, though, unlike her, he’s more than capable of taking a few hard hits. Barret can attack enemies that Tifa and Cloud can’t reach, and the Gatling gun serving as his right arm can fire off a variety of different blasts and volleys.

Anyone that’s played through theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakedemo will be familiar with some of the attacks and abilities that the images display. They come from Square Enix and have been gathered together in a tweet. The top-left screenshot shows Barret’s most basic attack: when a player presses the square button, Barret simply shots whatever enemy the player has him targeting. Holding the square button will cause him to spray the enemy will bullets for however long its held.

Barret’s triangle button, on the other hand, will trigger his “Overcharge” attack, as seen in the top-right image. Overcharge will cause Barret to fire off a barrage of shots more powerful than his basic attacks; its strength can eliminate smaller, full-health enemies with a single-use. After it’s fired, the ability will enter a cooldown phase, but players can speed up its recovery by repeatedly pressing the triangle button – three presses should bring it back to full if it’s empty. When used successfully, Overcharge fills up theATB gaugerather quickly, which lets Barret use attacks like Focused Shot.

Focused Shot fires off a single, bright blue blast and uses up all of the player’s available ATB gauges. However, in exchange, it does a ton of damage to whatever it hits. On top of that, it drastically fills up the enemy’s stagger gauge, which, when full, makes them defenseless, immobile, and susceptible to more damage than normal. Attacking staggered enemies also fills up the ATB gauge faster, allowing players to get their investment back quickly so they can either use Focus Shot again orBarret’s other abilities, like, Lifesaver.

Lifesaver didn’t appear in theFF7 Remakedemo, and unlike the other abilities showcased in these images, this one doesn’t cause Barret to shot anything. Instead, Lifesaver acts as a support ability and allows Barret to share some of his HP with injured party members.

Final Fantasy 7 Remakewill launch for the PlayStation 4 on July 27, 2025.
