What Happened During “The End?”
At the end of November, Epic Games confirmed thatFortniteChapter 2’s days were numbered, and that the game would once again go through some major changes. It was all meant to end on December 4 in an event fittingly titled “The End.” Players flocked to their respective platforms, and strapped in for a finale that, ifFortnite’s other events were anything to go by, would be impressive.
As players dropped in, they spawned next to a giant Blue Cube. Soon, Cube Monsters were sent after the players, and if they held out for thirty minutes the event would truly begin whenthe Cube Queen was awoken. As the Queen woke up, the Pyramid in the center of the map began to shake, and a long beam of light shot into the sky - as can be expected from any modern action blockbuster.
This beam of light opened a rift in the sky, from which a number of flying aircraft shaped like saucers energed. These saucers sprung into action, flying toward players. As more and more shipsattacked the Blue Cubeand players tried to hold back the Queen’s forces with an infinite ammo assault rifle, the Cube’s shield lowered and it exploded into a million fragments.
A quick cut then took place, and a cinematic played out in which a captured Jonesy is about to be interrogated by Slone and her IO soldiers. Fortunately,Fortnite’s most mysterious character, The Foundation, stormed in just at the right moment to save Jonesy, taking off his helmet to reveal the face ofDwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The cinematic then showedThe Foundationfiddling with some power sources, letting his team know via radio that they can “Initiate Phase Two.” As the players made their way to the control room of the secret base, an enemy Caretaker smashes the room’s glass windows, causing it to flood immediately as the base is located underwater.
As players floated to the surface, the screen cut in and out, adding to the uncertainty of the situation. As players hit the surface of the water, they could see the Island in front of them, slowly rotating on its axis. The event ends withthe Island being completely flipped. Thankfully, fans of the game’s story don’t have to wait to find out what happens next, asFortniteChapter 3 is already available and ready to play. Along with some new interesting plot details, the third chapter introduced a popular range of Spider-Man skins, along with web-swinging mechanics and sliding.
Fortniteis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
