Like many other anime-inspired RPGs,Genshin Impactgives players the ability to choose between two or more responses to a given situation. However, while some titles can change radically depending on what players choose to say or do,Genshin Impact’s dialogue choices often appear to be purely cosmetic. A group of fans recently gathered to poke fun at how little choice the game actually gives its players when deciding what to say.
Genshin Impact’s dialoguecan cover a wide range of speaking styles and topics, from Zhongli’s philosophical musings on the nature of–and need for–godhood to Diona’s one-girl crusade against the concept of alcohol. However, the Traveler often gets a very limited set of responses to choose from, especially outside of Hangout events.

Redditor flanunu kicked off the discussion by sharing a screenshot of one particularly ridiculous dialogue choice taken fromGenshin Impact. This supposed choice gives the player the option to say either “Are you alright?” or “Are you okay?” The lack of choice here may grate on players, especially sinceGenshin Impactoffers a variety of choicesand customization options in other areas of the game–just not when it comes to actually interacting with the characters. Several other users joked that this was a Michael Jackson song reference rather than an actual choice presented to players.
Another Redditor, aznavour-00, stated that the odds are good that the choice doesn’t even matter becauseGenshin Impact’s story tends to be a linear path. The replies to this comment note that sometimes NPCs will straight-up ignore the Traveler’s words, complain that gamers are unable to change the text speed, and a lot of quests are spent running between NPCs and letting them ramble at the player. The main exceptions to this arethe game’s Hangout events, which offer more dialogue choices and multiple endings. However, a number of users observed that it’s still very hard to lose hearts or fail a Hangout event, which can make them seem linear as well.
According to two more Redditors,Genshin Impactwill occasionally just split a single response into two supposed dialogue options to give the illusion of choice. A number of users stated that they believe the game’s dialogue has been made unnecessarily long to artificially inflate the game’s content, which could explain some things. Perhaps one reason there areso many Paimon memesis that she almost always responds to being called “emergency food,” giving her a sense of life and vitality that other avenues in the game lack.
Genshin Impactis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. A Switch version is currently in development with no confirmed release date.
