In a recent blog post, George R.R. Martin reflected on his work with theElden Ringteam, starting with the day Hidetaka Miyazaki and the other developers reached out to him. He stated that theElden Ringdevelopers wanted him to create the backstory and history for their new game - a task that would end up introducing grand, mythologicalheroes like Godfrey toElden Ring’s world. The author adds that he finished his part of the collaboration years ago and then sat back to watch the game come together. Apparently, the game is now finished, and it looks amazing.
According to the blog post, George R.R. Martin doesn’t have a lot of experience playing video games, much less making them. He stated that he once played strategy games likeRailroad Tycoon, but he doesn’t appear to have been familiar with From Software’s body of work before this collaboration. Regardless, the offer was apparently too exciting for him to refuse. AlthoughElden Ring’s in-game text wasn’t written by George R.R. Martin, the game’s history and backstory was, and the influence definitely shows.
As of writing, it appears that George R.R. Martin’s fans believe his writing willadd depth toElden Ring. However, some replies under the Twitter post linking to his blog openly question why the author was working on a video game instead of his next book. A few users outright demanded that George R.R. Martin get back to work onThe Winds of Winter, which has been in progress for roughly a decade. Regardless, it is nice to see that he is excited about the game.
