Now, Insomniac also branching out further now with the latest announcement of astandaloneWolverinegamethat will likely be set in the same universe.Spider-Mangames in the past couple of decades have offered emergent gameplay concepts, though some games were more successful or preferred than others.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions(2010) andSpider-Man: Edge of Time(2011) are two examples that decided to bring forward an emphasis onmultiple playable Spider-Man characters, distinguished from one another in different costumes or with different abilities. Rock Rider, who is a graphic designer for The Escapist, has recreated each games' box art, replacing each game’s original Spider-Man character art with models fromMarvel’s Spider-Man.Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' box artfeatures Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 in the front, followed by Peter Parker’s Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, and lastly the Ultimate Spider-Man continuity’s Peter Parker, who wields the alien symbiote throughout the game. Rather,Spider-Man: Edge of Timesimply features Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s original, classic suit.

Rock Rider’s design ofSpider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' box art needed to be changed, however, because a symbiote suit cosmetic does not exist yet inMarvel’s Spider-Man’s suit catalogue. Instead, Rock Rider used the black-and-green Stealth Suit, or ‘Big Time’ Suit.Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensionshas players hopping from one dimension to another and playing as different Spider-Men to retrieve artifact slab shards.

Spider-Man: Edge of Timefeatures a two-way time gateway portal where, on each end, one Spider-Man must work together with the other to thwart Alchemax scientist Walker Sloan. Each title deals with dimensional rifts and, as Rock Rider states, would make for exciting additions toInsomniac’sSpider-Manfranchise.

If Insomniac was to remaster eitherSpider-Man: Shattered DimensionsorSpider-Man: Edge of Time, they already have a phenomenal blueprint for such gameplay and level design withRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Ratchet and Rivet sling themselves through pocket dimensions and travel distances instantaneously with the PS5’s remarkable load times. EitherSpider-Mangame’s proposed concept could certainly take advantage of that technology for quicker swaps between characters or environments.

Spider-Man: Edge of Timeis much more story-driven and focuses only on Peter’s Amazing Spider-Man and Miguel’s Spider-Man 2099, but they are again isolated into separate dimensional rifts for the majority of the game. Interestingly, actions in each dimension alter the fabric of reality for the other dimension, which is frequently seen through scripted gameplay. These moment-to-moment details, such as massive Atrocity tentacles obstructing paths through rifts, would also translate well to a PS5 remaster from Insomniac.

That said, it is likely Insomniac plans to continue working solely on original games andMarvel’s Spider-Mansequels, though that is ultimately what fans desire as well.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is currently scheduled to release in 2023 for PS5.
