Although players are hungry forGrand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar continues to prove thatGTA Online, in its current state, still has life in it. Updates are still released semi-regularly, and new content is still forthcoming. It’s even rumored that aLiberty City map will be addedin a future patch, though that remains to be seen.
Well, the Summer Special upadate has landed, and it has certainly brought some interesting things toGTA Online. New things to drive and new games to try are to be expected, including F1 style Open Wheel races. But even people who don’t usually enjoyGTA’s races may find themselves trying these soon, and for all the wrong reasons.

When the update was released yesterday, one enterprising Reddit user found that the world record for one of the Open Wheel races was not updating properly. Said player passed the WR by one second and was awarded a massive RP (rating point) prize for doing so. Upon trying the race again he discovered tha the WR had not changed. Beating the WR awarded the prize for doing so again (another big RP prize). After testing this several times, it seemed the glitch is consistent, and could result in huge RP gains for players. It seems that beyond the new cars and missions, what the Summer Update really doesis let everyone shoot up the level tree.
At least, it was for a while. As of this article, it seems the glitch has been, if not fixed, made very difficult to exploit. While other players at first stated the glitch worked for them as well, it seems that Rockstar has caught on. At the moment, the WR for the races has climbed to ridiculously short times, including 10 seconds for at least one race. No need to invest inGTA’s fastest cars, there’s a real chance the glitch will be fixed for good soon.
Apparently, the actual glitch arises from falsely attributing the new WR to whoever the game says currently holds the old WR. The game can’t attribute the time to the wrong person properly, so it doesn’t go through. Whether this problem has actually been fixed is unclear, as is its cause. It could be fromthe new cars introduced toGTAthrough the patch, but this seems somewhat unlikely.
As of now it doesn’t look like there will be punishments for those who exploited the glitch. Whether or not the short WR fix, if it is actually a fix, will persist, is also unclear. All things considered it’s not too surprising Rockstar was on top of the glitch so fast. The companyfixed several ofGTA’s money exploitsnot long ago, and has practice in dealing with system abusing bugs.
Grand Theft Auto Onlineis available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
