The Korean dystopian dramaSquid Gamehad Netflix’s biggest series launch yet, so it may not be a surprise to hear that fans of the show have been hard at work creating tributes to it, including crossovers with other franchises. One fan recently put together an edit that sees the masked guards ofSquid Gamechallenging the players to a game ofGwent.

Redditor Rick100chaises shared the image, which features edited screenshots fromtheSquid Gameseries. The result is as hilarious as it is concerning, particularly for those familiar with the rules ofGwentand the role it plays in the largerThe Witcherfranchise.

The first screenshot is largely unedited, showing two rows of masked guards while subtitles ominously prepare to announce the next game. The second screenshot is where things begin to change - not only is the game declared to beGwent, the image focuses on five masked guards dressed in red, green, blue, black, and purple jumpsuits, each with the icon of aGwentfaction on their mask. In the final screenshot,Squid Game’s protagonist Seong Gi-hun beams at the camera while sporting silver hair, slit-pupiled yellow eyes, a red crescent-shaped scar, and two swords poking up over his shoulder in imitation ofThe Witcherprotagonist and notedGwententhusiast Geralt of Rivia.

Although the edit focuses mainly on the set-up, fans of both series quickly began theorizing about how aGwentchallenge inSquid Gamewould turn out.Squid Gamepits its debt-ridden participantsagainst each other in children’s games, with the losers being lethally eliminated. Meanwhile,Gwentstarted out as one of Geralt’s few respites from violence and death in the cold, dangerous world ofThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This thematic contradiction may explain why many fans seem to take the crossover lightly.

One Redditor immediately stated they would win using the Nilfgaard deck, which as of writing has yet to receive the nerfs it may or may not need. Another user countered that they would usethe Scoia’taelGwentdeck, which led to some discussion about how the faction’s name is pronounced. Other comments tossed out possible limitations to theGwentchallenge, such as playing with no spy cards, weather cards, or decoy cards. One user took another angle by joking that the next game will be “not playing Ciri,” while a second used the opportunity to ask questions about howGwentis played. Overall, though, fans seem to have gotten a kick out of this clever meme.
