Originally announced in 2019, fans have had a long wait forHollow Knight: Silksong. With an initial flurry of announcements and behind-the-scenes looks, updates aroundHollow Knight: Silksonghave been fairly few and far between as the years went by. This has left many fans wondering when the follow-up to the hugely successfulHollow Knightwill come out, and the delay has only increased anticipation for the sequel as players become more and more impatient. Thanks to the critical acclaim of its predecessor,Hollow Knight: Silksonghas a lot to live up to, and this includes the first game’s DLCs.

Even if players love a base game when it comes out, some will play it through once or twice and then move on to the next thing. Expansions are a great way to keep gamers invested and to add another layer to the initial title, likeHollow Knight’s four DLC packs. Each one brings something different and adds its own elements to the originalHollow Knightexperience. After the heights of expansions likeGodmaster, it’s hard to see howHollow Knight: Silksongwill be able to top it.

How Hollow Knight’s DLCs Set The Bar

Team Cherry’s 2017 titleHollow Knightwas a runaway success. The Metroidvania-style gameplay, charmingly macabre design, and punishingly fun combat culminated in a critical and commercial hit, and it was therefore unsurprising that a sequel was announced a few short years after its release. However, in between the upcoming sequel and the release of the first game, players were able to enjoy a selection of content packs that allowed them to delve deeper into the kingdom of Hallownest and encounter new challenges of a scale unseen in the base game.

DLCs likeHidden Dreamsonly added a handful of new content like a new fast-travel mechanic and two boss fights, but others likeThe Grimm Troupebrought with them a new major quest and fresh plotlines to unravel. Chief among these expansions, however, is probablyGodmaster, which was a substantive addition toHollow Knightand an exciting change of pace. As well as adding new endings, unique areas, interesting NPCs, and compelling lore, theGodmasterDLC was a whole new challengefor players that had beaten the base game. Gamers could face tougher versions of the enemies they came up against previously and the DLC also revealed different endings steeped in lore that opened up the world ofHollow Knightfurther.

How Hollow: Knight Silksong Could Respond

Godmastermight not be for everyone, especially those that already found the original combat andboss encounters inHollow Knighta trial. However, for fans that had mastered the difficulty of the base game and had attuned themselves to the rhythm of its fights,Godmasterwas an enjoyable elevation that truly tested their mettle and allowed them to come out the other side feeling like an untouchable, omnipotent deity. The reward for gamers' hard work – new areas and characters and another side to the story – made the commitment worth it, and gave fans something to aim for as well.

Hollow Knight: Silksongis moving the action tothe kingdom of Pharloom, a new setting that makes the protagonist Hornet ascend up towards a shining citadel rather than emulate the Kngiht’s exploration of the depths of Hallownest. There are a lot of changes coming with the sequel alongsideHollow Knight: Silksong’smain character and location, and players don’t even know if the sequel will be getting its own DLC. IfHollow Knight: Silksongfollows in the footsteps of the first game, it will offer gamers a variety of expansions, but toppingGodmasteris going to take a carefully considered, uniquely challenging, and undoubtedly rewarding experience that continues to build on the distinctive world thatHollow Knight: Silksongcreates.
