Virtual reality’s been popular for a while, though it is still not entirely mainstream. While2021 saw great VR titles, many AAA games are unlikely ever to receive VR support. However, some modders are working hard to change that. This includes a few games that players might not expect, such as third-person action RPGHorizon Zero Dawn.
Modder LukeRoss just released an impressive VR mod forHorizon Zero Dawn. The mod also changes the camera perspective to first-person, letting players truly step into the shoes of warrior Aloy as she journeys across a beautiful post-apocalyptic world.

The mod is currently in beta, and it may be a while before LukeRoss releases a finished version. It’s also only available to his supporters on Patreon, who pay $10 a month for unlimited access to his mods. However, it supports and should work correctly onmost major VR headsets, including Oculus, SteamVR, and other platforms using the OpenXR programming interface. The first-person interface also appears to be very well implemented, based on the preview showcased on the Cas and Chary VR YouTube channel.
The subject of paid mods can be a touchy one for some fans, and, understandably, some people would have preferred it be free. That would make it easier for players to try it out, if nothing else. However, it’s not as if VR support and a first-person camera are insubstantial changes. Both also require significant overhauls toHorizon Zero Dawn’suser interface. It’s reasonable that LukeRoss might want some credit for his work, as many in the modding community would agree. At least in this instance, it’s clear that all of the money is actually going to the mod maker instead of a game publisher with minimal involvement in the mod itself.
It’s still an open question whenHorizon Zero Dawnfans should expect a full version of LukeRoss. Some, such as game journalist John Papadopoulos, expressed skepticism that fans would ever see a 1.0 release. He points out that LukeRoss created a similarvirtual reality mod forRed Dead Redemption 2that’s still in early access. If nothing else, this begs the question of why the mod creator can’t finish one project before starting a new one.
On the other hand, theRed Dead Redemption 2mod is still less than a year old. Meanwhile, it’s not unheard of for mods to stay in early access for years before the 1.0 release. Still, that’s usually due to the hobbyist nature of most mod projects. Hopefully, the fact that these mods are behind a Patreon wall means it won’t take quite as long for theHorizon Zero Dawn modto get a full release.
