House of the Dragonshowrunner Ryan Condal recently appeared at the first-ever Official Game of Thrones Fan Convention, where he spoke a little bit about his relationship with George R.R. Martin. According to Condal, Martin is actually quite casual about dropping spoilers for his upcomingbook,The Winds of Winter, which is the sixth installment in theA Song of Ice and Fireseries thatGame of Thrones is based on.
House of the Dragonis actually not based on the mainA Song of Ice and Firebook series. Instead, it’s based on supplementary material that was released inFire & Blood,a novel written by Martin, which is considered an in-universe history as told by the Maesters of Westeros.House of the Dragonis supposed to cover Targaryen history, whileA Song of Ice and FireandGame of Thronestake place after the dragon-riding dynasty has been overthrown.

In a video call to the convention, which was posted in part toTwitterby a journalist present at the panel, Condal spoke a bit aboutHouse of the Dragon. He then later revealed that Martin, who is frequently involved in the production of the series, has told him a few tidbits about what will happen in future novels:
ThoughGame of Thronesaired its contentious series finalenearly four years ago,A Song of Ice and Fireis actually not a finished book series. The last installment,A Dance With Dragons, was released back in 2011. There are still two more installments to go, and Condal mentioned that he was rooting for Martin to finish the series, which first hit shelves in 1996.
A popular fan theory holds that Aegon Targaryen is actually not who he claims - he’s actually (whether knowingly or not) a pretender from House Blackfyre, a Targaryen off-shoot branch that has launched more than a few rebellions in Westeros, but which was presumed extinct by the time of the novels.George R.R. Martin’s worksoften include historical allusions; much ofA Song of Ice and Fireis based on the historic War of the Roses between Houses York and Lancaster. In this instance, Martin would be making a parallel between Perkin Warbeck, who was a pretender for the English throne at that time, and Aegon Targaryen. Evidently, Condal believes in this theory, but he carefully mentions that it’s not something Martin has talked to him about.
