Margot Robbie wowed most audiences with her performance as Harley Quinn inThe Suicide Squadfilms. However, Robbie’s future in the DCU remains unknown to most and is the subject of online rumors. Recently, James Gunn responded to a specific report about Robbie’s DCU future because it went beyond being false. While fans knowSuperman and Batman will be recastfor Gunn’s DC Universe, the fates of other characters from the outgoing DCEU remain a mystery. After reports surfaced claiming Robbie was offered the Sue Storm role in theFantastic Fourreboot, fans wondered if this meant her time asThe Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn was over because actors who join the MCU are not allowed to star in DC projects (which was confirmed by Chris Hemsworth).RELATED:Superman: Legacy Casting Reportedly Narrowed Down To Just A Few Picks For Clark And LoisThe DCU Leaks Twitter account recently wrote a post claiming Robbie was no longer playing Harley Quinn in the DCU, and a new actress will be cast. DCU leaks claimed Gunn deleted a post about working with Robbie again after learning she signed on to join the MCU because her contract states she cannot do any more DC projects (it should be noted that neither Marvel Studios nor Disney has confirmedreports about Robbie joining theFantastic Fourrebootor any other MCU project). “Dude, why do you just keep posting lies? Sometimes they’re just stupid made up stuff. But other times, making up bullshit like this about people I care about, can be hurtful,” Gunn wrote in response to the post. “Maybe you’re having a difficult time in life & lying for attention is how you get solace. But please find a better way.”
DCU Leaks responded to Gunn’s post by promising to “do better” and asking if his reaction meant he was ok with “some” of their lies. “I don’t think any lying is ok,” Gunn replied. “I’m just demarcating the difference between stupid lies and potentially harmful ones.” In a follow-up post, DCU Leaks admitted they started their account to share their ideas for the DCU but presented them as leaks to “make more people grasp onto [their] ideas.” However, DCU Leaks acknowledged that this method is not alright and said their account was ending, though they are still posting as of this writing. In a later post, DCU Leaks wrote, “you’re all welcome for getting confirmation that Margot is still Harley Quinn.”
Gunn has shut down Superman casting rumorsand other false claims, but this latest report seemingly crossed a line. It’s not impossible to imagine a scenario where DCU Leaks' false claims could have caused an unnecessary rift between Robbie and Gunn had the report reached Robbie without any context. After all, people found important news online before being informed directly, like when Tom Holland allegedly found out he was cast as Spider-Man through an Instagram post before Kevin Feige called him.
Fortunately, Gunn quickly debunks rumors and false reports, and no harm seems to have come from the false claim about Robbie. Hopefully,Robbie’s future as Harley Quinnwill be clearer sooner rather than later. However, until then, fans should be cautious when reading about or making unverified claims.
