Westworld’s cancellation took the fanbase by surprise, but it looks like the cast and crew are still holding out hope for a renewal. James Marsden, who portrayed Teddy in the series, stated that he still wants to see the show get a proper ending.

Westworldwas once one of HBO’s flagship series. It was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and was based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name. The show was known for its cerebral and time-bending nature. Fans would frequently speculate on the tiniest details because of the show’s meticulous production. Unfortunately, the series was cancelled due to changes in leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery, andWestworldwas even pulled off HBO Max.

In an interview withRolling Stone, Marsden spoke about his disappointment over the cancellation. He also remained hopeful thatWestworldmay end on its own terms. “I’d be lying to you if I told you that the way we endedWestworldwasn’t a disappointment. I’m never going to speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish,” Marsden said. “[…] But who knows, maybe there’s some world where it can get completed somehow. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted to.”

Marsden’s Teddy was last seen being uploaded into the “Sublime,” a world where hosts can upload their consciousness to live in peace. Marsden returned for season 4, but it turned out that he was a creation of Christina’s (Evan Rachel Wood) mind. Christina’s programming as Dolores was attempting to re-establish itself, and Teddy was a manifestation of this. One ofWestworld’s unanswered questionssurrounds the couple: it’s unknown if they ever did reunite within the Sublime.

Nolan and Joy have been open about their plans forWestworld. Season 5 was supposed to be the last, with season 4 supposedly having undergone some last-minute rewrites to make it a series finale in case the show was not renewed. However, the finale left the show open-ended. Though thecast ofWestworldwas still paid for season 5, some hold out hope for another streaming service to pick up the show.
