Summary

Jujutsu Kaisenis no stranger to quirky and complicated techniques that completely change the trajectory of a fight. From Cursed Techniques that spawn gambling scenarios whose outcome and inner workings depend entirely on those of pachinko slot machines to those that create an invisible force field that doesn’t let anything through, the fights in this series are so much fun to witness due to how out-of-the-box and spectacular these techniques are.

One such technique belongs to Miguel Oduol, a character whose time in the serieshas been quite brief but very memorable. However, while his skill was always formidable, his Cursed Technique made its long-awaited debut inthe recent release of Chapter 255ofJujutsu Kaisenin the almost never-ending fight against Sukuna, so let’s break down Miguel’s Cursed Technique and see why it fits him perfectly.

Manga Debut

Jujutsu Kaisen, Prequel Chapter 0-3, “Punishment for the Weak”

Introduced in theJujutsu Kaisen 0movie and the prequel chapters of the manga, Miguel is one of the few known Curse Users that exist outside of Japan. Being from Africa, he is a character who has spent most of his life abroad and has even received all of his training from the outside, which is shown by the fact that he has some sort of foreign Cursed Energy that not many people can recognize.

In the movie, he was part of Suguru Geto’s squad that was tasked to bring down Jujutsu High and eliminate non-sorcerers. However, unlike most of his teammates, he did not harbor any particular negativity towards those who could not use Cursed Energy and, in fact, he simply joined Geto due to his love for him, wanting to see him fulfill all of his dreams. He was so loyal that he chose to fight Gojo, the strongest sorcerer in the world, at the behest of Geto.Following his leader’s death, Miguel left the group.

He doesn’t have his Domain. Gojo left a nice souvenir… and his heart hasn’t fully healed! I almost feel bad, coming in and stealing the glory.

After the events of the movie/prequel chapters, Miguel left the series for quite a while but would eventually have a reluctant reunion with Gojo, where he would be tasked with training Yuta abroad. Though the two were initially enemies, Yuta and Miguel get along quite well, showing the true value of Miguel as a character.

Miguel’s Cursed Technique And Abilities

Chapter 255 of theJujutsu Kaisenmanga saw the long-awaited return of the sorcerer, as he finally jumped into the fight against Sukuna. Over here, he fought alongside one of his old teammates from the days he spent with Geto; Larue. Together, they fought against Sukuna briefly and, despite Gege Akutami hyping Miguel a bit too much by claiming he went toe-to-toe against Gojo, the sorcerer doesquite well against the King of Curses.

Miguel has great reserves of Cursed Energy that greatly bolster his already impressive physical attributes. In his fight against Gojo, he used his Cursed Energy to toughen his body to take shots from the strongest sorcerer in the world and in doing so, garnered a lot of praise from him as well.

Miguel’s Cursed Technique is a unique one known as Prayer Song. There’s a specific beat that is etched within Miguel’s body and when he follows this beat by dancing to it, his physical attributes are greatly strengthened, which has another benefit that allows Miguel to expel Cursed Spirits or drive them away from himself. ThoughPrayer Song has no innate Domain attached to itlike most other Cursed Techniques do, it can still buff and debuff him and his opponents. It was due to Miguel dancing along with this rhythm that he dodged all of Sukuna’s slashes in Chapter 255.

Miguel’s other Abilities and Strengths

Since 99% of sorcerers in the entire world are Japanese, Prayer Song gives Miguel yet another advantage. When his body is strengthened by the technique, it makes him even more fierce due to how different his musculature and bone structure are to regular Japanese sorcerers. All these things come together in one package to make Miguel a scary opponent to fight.

Moreover, Gojo even called him a tough opponent for him to deal with after their fight inJujutsu Kaisen 0. This was further expounded recently in Chapter 255, where Gojo states that if they were to fight withoutthe benefit of their Cursed Energy and Technique, Gojo would win out over Miguel in terms of linear movement, but would probably lose in terms of point movement, which essentially means Miguel is more agile in a fight.

If Miguel and I competed physically without Cursed Techniques but with Cursed Energy Reinforcement, I could beat linear movement… but would probably lose in point movement.

Miguel’s move set is capped off perfectly by his use of the Black Rope, aSpecial Grade Cursed Toolthat took his family generations to weave. Much like Toji’s Inverted Spear of Heaven, this rope can negate any Cursed Technique that it goes up against and can even cancel out its effects, which allowed him to fight fairly well against Gojo. However, the rope burns away the more it’s used and is completely gone after Miguel’s duel against Gojo inJujutsu Kaisen 0.

Jujutsu Kaisencan be streamed onAmazon Prime.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Based on Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Mappa’s battle shonen anime envisions a world where Jujutsu Sorcerers battle against entities born out of Cursed Energy. One day, a teenager named Yuji Itadori is dragged into this conflict when he eats a possessed finger.
