DC’s Legends of Tomorrowis considered by many to be arguably the bestDCshow in The CW’s roster at the present. Sure, some might claim that title goes toSuperman & LoisorStargirl(and ifBlack Lightningwas still on, there’s another contender). But how many other shows involve saving a college-aged Barack Obama from a giant telepathic gorilla and a flesh-eating unicorn turning Woodstock into a bloodbath? At the very least, extra credit for thinking outside the box.
TheeccentricLegends of Tomorrowjust revealed a trailer teasing the 2nd half of its 6th and current season, and it’s got alien bowling (an excellent progression from the Baby Yoda-inspired episode from earlier. But before that, the show’s virtual panel at Comic-Con revealed some intriguing tidbits regarding the series going forward. As the apparent endgame of his current storyline, it seems as though series regular Matt Ryan will no longer be playing the smooth-talking magician John Constantine when season 6 concludes, but that doesn’t mean Ryan is going anywhere. (Regarding any other show, that sort of claim would probably sound strange.)

While Constantine will be leaving the show (in a move presumably related toHBO Max working on its ownConstantinereboot), Ryan will stick around. How does that work, exactly? Why, he’s playing another character who looks identical to Constantine, obviously. AfterLegends of Tomorrowseason 6 shoves off, he’ll stay on as the eccentric scientist Dr. Gwyn Davies, who will apparently be a central figure to the story of season 7. Longtime fans of the show will note that previous actors returning as new characters is by no means a new concept, as shown by Maisie Richardson-Sellers (who originally played Amaya/Vixen before leaving and returning as the shapeshifter Clotho/Charlie) and Tala Ashe (who regularly plays 2 different versions of wind totem wielder Zari).
Well, that’s one way to subvert the idea ofconstant recasts between seasons. But it isn’t the only change in personnel (so to speak) happening around theLegends of Tomorrowset. Amy Louise Pemberton, who has been the voice of the artificial intelligence known as Gideon for the show’s whole run, will soon transcend the voice-over booth and become an onscreen regular as a human version of the A.I. going forward. This won’t be the first time she has appeared in person as the character, but it will be the first time she does so in an extended capacity.
But back to the trailer.Legends of Tomorrowhas always reveledin the weird and surreal, and the upcoming batch of episodes appear to be no different. At one point, the long-awaited wedding of team co-captains Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) is interrupted by the arrival of a villain previously thought defeated. At another, the Legends are faced with the challenge of… winning a bowling game against some aliens. Yet a third situation features a Clue-inspired plot that turns all too real for the participants. In other words, this isLegends of Tomorrowthrough and through.
It’s good to know the series still has plenty of life left in it.Legends of Tomorrowis the perfect kind of show to just kick back, grab an entire lasagna, and binge like time doesn’t exist. More of that is always a great idea (the show, not the lasagna.)
