Not a lot of time is left between now and when more fromMarvel’s Spider-Man 2will need to be revealed, even if it does not reveal a lot about its narrative or gameplay. There will need to beat least one PlayStation Showcase dedicated toMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, likely at some time during the summer, when Sony can begin its marketing campaign and release as many or as few trailers as it would like. However, one incredible marketing strategy fromMarvel’s Spider-Manwould be a great idea to reprise for the highly anticipated sequel.

Marvel’s Spider-Manhad a ton of trailers both cinematic and in-engine before its own release, revealing that it would have a Sinister Six of villains for players to go up against. The Inner Demons’ Mr. Negative was a big part of the game’s marketing as well, being included in its initial teaser way back in 2016. ButMarvel’s Spider-Man’s main antagonistwas not revealed until players either began the game and played past its introductory Kingpin quest, or took a look atMarvel’s Spider-Man’s Collector’s Edition statue.

Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Collector’s Edition Statue Spoiled Its Villains

Back beforeMarvel’s Spider-Manwas released in late 2018, it needed to have its Deluxe and Collector’s editions revealed to market them. This way, fans obviously knew what content they would receive for their purchase, such as the Digital Deluxe edition’s inclusion of all three chapters ofMarvel’s Spider-Man’s post-launch Black Cat DLC. The Collector’s edition, however, was easily its most intriguing option.

Most Collector’s editions contain a costly statue or figurine that represents either the playable protagonist or another character from the game, butMarvel’s Spider-Man’s own Collector’s edition statuewas distinct because it was unknown what it would depict. The only part of it that was shown was Spider-Man perched atop something, and even this representation of Spider-Man was taken from in-game and not the actual statue model.

Spider-Man was shown perched atop a large grey box labeled ‘RAFT’ and therefore insinuated that a villain of some sort would be within it. This created a great amount of intrigue because fans would need to purchase the Collector’s edition if they wanted to be one of the first consumers to see what the statue was, but it was also a predicament since the statue itself was revealed to spoil the game. The statue itself has Spider-Man perched atop the equipment of the Sinister Six, and among that equipment is a large coil of one of Doctor Octopus’ tentacles.

That meant fans needed to resist the urge to look inside the Collector’s edition box until they had played throughMarvel’s Spider-Man’s narrative unless they were content with having its main antagonist revealed. It has already been revealed thatVenom and potentially Kraven could be main antagonists inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, but if Insomniac and Sony want to stir up as much anticipation and intrigue as the original game it would do well to have its own obscured Collector’s edition statue teeming with irresistible spoilers.

The only disadvantage of this marketing strategy is that if it leaks, all fans will have an easy way of accidentally learning some massive spoilers aboutMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. Leaks often occur regardless, though, like how Doctor Octopus had been leaked beforeMarvel’s Spider-Man’s launch. Either way,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has the most to gain by remaining secretive, and another spoiler-rich Collector’s edition statue would look great as a pair for theMarvel’s Spider-Manfranchise’s main installments.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is scheduled to release in Fall 2023 for PS5.
