World of Warcraftjust announcedThe Dragonflight Codex, a companion lore book for the upcoming eponymous expansion. However, the listing for the new book seemingly held a ground-breaking revelation: that a belovedWorld of Warcraftcharacter was secretly a dragon all along.

World of Warcraft: The Dragonflight Codex, marketed as “the ultimateWoWfan’s guide to everything dragons,” is scheduled for a May 22, 2025 release. The 192-page book promises over 100 new illustrations, and will be going into detail about the abilities and history of the dragons, dracthyr, and other denizens of the Dragon Isles. The book will be written from the perspective of Khadgar, one ofWorld of Warcraft’smost iconic archmagi.

However, the Amazon listing claimed Khadgar was a member of the Bronze Dragonflight. As a character who first appeared inWarcraft 1, this seemingly new fact was an earth-shattering revelation–or at least for the few minutes untilWorld of Warcraftnarrative lead Steve Danuser appeared to dispel the confusion. Danuser confirmed the listing had erroneously identified Khadgar as a member of the Bronze Dragonflight, and that the well-known archmage was not actually a dragon.

Khadgar’s connection to the Bronze Dragonflight has been the subject of rumors before. InWarlords of Draenor, he used an ability called Call of the Timewalkers, a reference to the group of mortals who work withthe Bronze Dragonflight inWorld of Warcraft. Because of this listing error, many wonder ifThe Dragonflight Codexwill build upon this former speculation and confirm or deny Khadgar’s connection to the Bronze Dragonflight in other ways.

Players are curious, but hesitant, about the newWorld of Warcraftlore book. BothThe Grimoire of the ShadowlandsandExploring Azeroth: Kalimdorreceived lukewarm reception, due to shallow content and reliance on problematic stereotypes. IfThe Dragonflight Codexis going to deliver a fulfillingWorld of Warcraftlore experience, it will have to provide something valuable to the worldbuilding of Azeroth while being respectful of its audience.Exploring Azeroth: Northrend, thethird in theWorld of Warcraftatlas series, also releases in November. If this newWoWbook can satisfy players in a way the previous entry did not, perhaps they will have more hope forThe Dragonflight Codex.

Interestingly enough, the listing forWorld of Warcraft: The Dragonflight Codexmentioned another new book:A is for Azeroth: The ABC’s of World of Warcraft. This officially-licensed 32-page children’s book will be written byWorld of Warcraftauthor Christie Golden, and is set to release June 15, 2025.
