Combat is obviously a key way for players of a survival crafting game to interact with the world they inhabit.Nightingale, the upcoming survival crafting title from the BioWare alumni at Inflexion, is no exception.
More than just melee weapons and firearms, though,Nightingalewill be arming its Realmwalkers with the gift of the Fae intrinsic to its deep worldbuilding–magic. This is in keeping withNightingale’s setting as a Gaslamp Fantasy game, where humanity and the Fae have coexisted for centuries. That adds a unique set of skills to the arsenal of Realmwalkers.Nightingaledevelopers spoke with Game Rant about the way these tools and talents blend together to create a player’s experience, and the versatility of build available in the game, including Inflexion CEO Aaryn Flynn
How Realmwalkers Can Get Kitted Out
In addition to 18 spells, players will have access to 7 types of melee weapons and 4 categories of firearms. Blending those will allow Realmwalkers a lot of versatility, and whileNightingaleis largely a gameplay-first title, its weapons are tied to its overarching lore. As Flynn explained,
The Fae introduced humanity to magic, and the magic you see in-game is built upon their knowledge. Spells you use and portal technology all stems from Fae influence, both of which are major gameplay factors.
Given the game’s Gaslamp Fantasy setting, this magic is paired with early firearms as seen in other games likethe similarly BioWare-esqueGreedfall, which also affords players access to firearms, melee weapons, and magic. A key difference between the survival experience ofNightingaleandGreedfall, though, lies in the flexibilityNightingalegives players to explore their specializations of choice.
Magic, Melee, and Firearms Go Hand-in-Hand
Flynn said that magic combines with crafting to allow players to specialize theirRealmwalker character designs, at least in terms of interacting with the game. This opens a ton of avenues for players to kit themselves out for their preferred playstyle. That’s not surprising given how systems of the game afford great flexibility across the board.
Players can craft equipment and learn spells that will allow them to specialize in certain areas and lean into their preferred playstyle. You can always change your equipment and magic to try new playstyles with your character, so long as you craft and learn the new spells that you want.
Ultimately, players will be able to engage with these systems how they like, which is practically the underlying ethos of everything from gameplay tocharacter creation inNightingale.
