The officialNinjalaTwitter account has announced that its new free-to-play bubblegum ninja fighter has already broken 1 million downloads. To honor the occasion and reconcile forinitial server access errors, the game’s developers, GungHo, will also be gifting players a bundle of in-game goods.
Ninjalaclearly struck a chord with a large number of gamers (as evidenced by its hasty 1 million downloads), but the popularity came with a frustrating consequence. Ninjas trying to login throughout the game’s first hours faced constant server access errors, which rendered the colorful brawler nearly unplayable. The game has thankfully been stabilized since then, but fans certainly appreciate the direct recognition of the incident, and the kind gesture.

Players can expect to receive 100 “Jala” and 10 Ippon Gum (Flame) weapon skins to celebrate the milestone. Ninjas should look forward to the Jala, which is theNinjalaversion of premium currency, likeGolden Acorns inPokemon Cafe Mix-difficult to come by, but also available for cash. The other half of the reward, though, is a bit controversial.
Weapon/avatar skins are often available in loot boxes, or sold by game developers for real-world money. In other words, gamers are used to lootboxes; it’s just that most players expect to keep those rewards after spending their money.Ninjalahas taken an interesting approach to this by introducing consumable cosmetics as part of their loot offerings. So, if a player were to customize their ninja yo-yo with a purchased jewel-toned skin, for example, that skin would expire after a single match.
It’s difficult to avoid a knee-jerk reaction, especially when money’s involved, but some fans are also pointing out the fact that even though the skins are consumable, they come often, and in multiples. Not to mention, clothing for player avatars does not expire in the same way, so ninjas can simply focus on collecting that instead of weapon skins.
Between its unique blend of up-close action andluck-based parrying, and its stylish Splatoon-leaning design,Ninjalahas quite the palette for new ninjas to explore. And regardless of cosmetics, theNinjalateam can sleep proudly knowing that their gamemade it through a delay, then second beta, and still made it onto 1 million players' Switches in a mere 24 hours.
