Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamityfeatures the frenzied gameplay of Koei Tecmo’sWarriorsseries.Age of Calamityis unique for telling a canon story set a century prior toBreath of the Wild. The game will give players the chance to play as Link and his fellow Champions, as they wage a doomed war against Calamity Ganon.

A possible next step for Nintendo in the September 26th announcement would be to clarify which characters are playable. The initial trailers forAge of Calamityteased a range of exciting possibilities. For example, the trailers teasedPrincess Zelda herself possibly being playable(and the game’s website later confirmed it). Although fans know the four Champions are playable, other characters remain unconfirmed. At the very least, players know several supporting characters inBreath of the Wild(such as Impa) were aliveAge of Calamity. This means they are also eligible to appear.
Players might find hints about future reveals from theplot threadsBreath of the Wildleft unresolved. Link’s memories inBreath of the Wildexplain Hyrule’s past, but the game reveals little about Link’s own childhood. The game also indirectly references a few crucial conversations never shown to the player. For example, Zelda’s diary describes a moment when Link explains to Zelda why he chooses not to talk. Including scenes like this could raise excitement even higher, showing new sides of both Link and Zelda.
Fans might also look to thePersonaseries for hints as to future announcements. After all, this is not the first time aWarriors-style game expanded on a game’s canon. Theas-yet-unlocalizedPersona 5 Scrambleis both aWarriorsgame and a canon sequel toPersona 5.However,Persona 5 Scramble’sannouncement didn’t clarify it was a direct sequel. This was only revealed later on. If this major aspect ofPersona 5 Scrambledid not appear initially, perhapsAge of Calamityhides something significant as well.
There is another unlikely but very exciting possibility for the upcoming announcement. Hyrule’s past could include teases forthe hotly-anticipatedBreath of the Wildsequel. BothAge of Calamityand theBreath of the Wildsequel appear to use the same map of Hyrule. This means new locations around Hyrule could appear inAge of Calamity, and then return in the Breathof the Wildsequel. In any case, fans only need to wait about two weeks to learn more about one of 2020’s biggest titles.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamitywill release for the Nintendo Switch on November 20th.
