Overwatch 2recently announced a new animated miniseries called Genesis, but it was secretly hinted at by Blizzard months before the announcement. Reddit user Joy_ow shared an image comparison showing the control room screen of theOverwatch 2Gibraltar map. In the first image, players can see the control room screen from launch, while the second shows the same screen after one of the updatesOverwatch 2received this year. The player notices that one of the images on the “active threats” screen got replaced, and this image is one of the scenes in the Genesis announcement trailer.

Genesis is a three-part miniseries, with the first part available on July 6 onOverwatch 2’s official YouTube channel. In the announcement trailer,Overwatch 2players spotted some scenes from the Omnic Crisis, which would make the miniseries a prequel to the events ofOverwatchandOverwatch 2. Another highlight of the trailer is the appearance of Mina Liao, one of the leading robotics experts in theOverwatchuniverse. Mina Liao is a key figure in the development of Omnics who is best known for having created Echo, thedamage hero fromOverwatch 2.

While Genesis is not a large-scale project released in cinemas or by a streaming platform, the animated miniseries comes at a crucial time forOverwatch 2. Since its launch,Overwatch 2has experienced constant controversy over constant issues with bugs, balancing, and poor matchmaking. Last month, Blizzard ignited another debate bylimiting access toOverwatch 2’s story missionsand requiring players to pay for the content. With the release of Genesis, Blizzard is attempting to bring positive attention toOverwatch 2by exploring a still-popular facet of the franchise: the story.

Overwatch 2is in early access on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
