Little to nothing is known about the project being referred to asPlayerUnknown’s Prologue. The project was initially revealed duringThe Game Awards 2019with a short concept video depicting a first-person view of an area of wilderness. The clip ends before revealing anything substantive aboutPlayerUnknown’s Prologue, but certainly piqued the curiosity of those watching. Brendan Greene, PlayerUnknown himself, isn’t ready to reveal anything aboutPrologueyet, but he does have something interesting to share.

What stands out in thePlayerUnknown’s Prologuetrailerisn’t necessarily the visual fidelity, though it is impressive. The wilderness is rather normal and familiar, which doesn’t make it particularly striking. What stands out is how dynamic the wilderness is. The foliage in the trailer sways with the wind, it’s pouring down rain and there’s a wetness to everything, and there’s a lot of great lighting and shadowing going on to accompany the fog and lightning. And that’s why Greene’s new information is so exciting.

According to Greene, shared via a short Twitter message, everything in theProloguetrailer is rendered in real-time in the Unity engine. That is to say, this video isn’t a pre-rendered cinematic. At one point or another, the footage was recorded live off of a machine. It may have been a very powerful machine, incomparable to your typicalgaming PCor console, but real-time is still real-time. WhateverProloguemay be, the hope is that it will look much like the trailer.

Greene has shared some information aboutPrologueoutside the trailer, of course. It’s already known thatPrologueisn’t going to be aPlayerUnknown’s Battlegroundssequel. It’s not even going to be a shooter, though it’s obviously still first-person. Beyond that, all Greene is willing to say is thatPrologueis the first step toward something bigger.Prologueis going to showcase some new technology that will only be built on in the future.

The big question spinning outGreene’s revelation that theProloguetrailer was rendered in real-time is what comes next. It’s possible that there was a demo developed exclusively to record this trailer. It’s also possible that the recording came from an alpha version of the game and is well into production. That the trailer was shown at all perhaps implies that it’s planned for release sooner rather than later. Expect Greene to share more information through 2020.

PlayerUnknown’s Prologuehas no confirmed release window or supported platforms.
