Summary

A newPlayStationState of Play livestream has just been announced for later this week. Sony occasionally holds special State of Play events to show off upcoming games for the PlayStation 5, though these are often different from the larger PlayStation Showcase livestreams in that they are shorter and mainly focus on smaller titles with one or two triple-A games at the center. Thelast PlayStation State of Play eventtook place in April, and put the spotlight onFinal Fantasy 16before its successful launch two months later.

Since then, PlayStation fans have been eagerly awaiting the next State of Play, especially after June’s blockbuster PlayStation Showcase that featured looks at major upcoming games likeMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, the long-awaited remake ofMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, andAssassin’s Creed: Mirage. Late last month, rumors started to spread thatSony has another State of Play plannedfor September after the company announced a price increase for the PlayStation Plus subscription service.

Now these rumors have been officially verified by PlayStation’s official blog, which announced a newPlayStationShowcase for Thursday, September 14. According to Shawne Benson of PlayStation’s Global Third Party Relations team, this livestream will start at 2 PM Pacific Time, 5 PM Eastern, and 11 PM Central European Summer Time. Unlike the massive PlayStation Showcase from June, this State of Play will be mainly focused on previously announced titles, including PlayStation VR games, indie titles, and major triple A-releases from third-party partners.

As fate would have it, this newly announced PlayStation State of Play isn’t the only gaming livestream happening later this week. Earlier today, Nintendo verified similar rumors of anew September 2023 Direct showcasealso taking place on Thursday, with fans guessing that the previously announcedLuigi’s Mansion: Dark Moonremaster and currently untitled Princess Peach spin-off game will be among the titles featured. As for the PlayStation State of Play, no specific games have been confirmed, though players could get one final look atMortal Kombat 1before its highly anticipated launch next week.

This Thursday is looking to be an exciting day for gamers, as both Sony and Nintendo are holding special livestreams to show off upcoming titles for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch respectively. Many have felt thata new State of Playwas overdue before this latest announcement, especially with the Microsoft-exclusiveStarfieldcurrently dominating the gaming landscape after its release last week.
