Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2once again appears to feature an Operator skin that’s visually problematic in moment-to-moment gameplay, though this time, the issue is the opposite of what it was with the infamously dark Roze skin. Being a live-service multiplayer game that banks heavily on visual customization, it’s a given that some skins will simply camouflage more than others would, but it can get rather egregious in some cases.

Naturally, a free-for-all approach to game cosmetics means thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has funny skinsfor players to choose from. The issue lies in the fact that some of them can blend phenomenally well with the game’s environments, with industrious players leveraging these boons for occasionally unfair gameplay situations.

This problem came to a head forCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2player, who goes by GOATonWii on Reddit, who posted on the game’s biggest subreddit about their encounter with one of the season’s most prolific Operator skins: the Blackcell version of Io. Locked behind a $30 microtransaction, the Blackcell Io skin changes colors from stark white to deep grey. As it turns out, this means that the player using this Operator can blend with certain maps phenomenally well, making it hard for other players to rapidly track them in head-to-head combat.

In GOATonWii’s particular case, the Blackcell Io player was laying still, which made them difficult to spot during a split-second duel, leading to GOATonWii’s death. TheCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s expensive Blackcell skinsare designed to stand out in most situations, but it seems that select map locations will allow them to blend in with their surroundings no matter what.

Not everyone enjoys the fact thatCall of DutyhasFortnite-level skinsnowadays, but the fact of the matter is that the more realistic military uniforms are specifically designed to achieve the same effect as that displayed by the Blackcell Io skin in the featured video. It’s easier to have wackier skins stand out in that respect, but they’re clearly not entirely immune to such problems.

The developer doesn’t generally shy away from reworking or outright removing problematic skins from the game. Though it certainly was an entirely different issue, Activision showed initiative inremoving Modern Warfare 2’s NickMercs cosmetics bundlefollowing the streamer’s bout of supposed bigotry. The chameleonic Io skin at least doesn’t have a controversy attached to it, if nothing else.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
