Purple Lamp Studios, the developer behind the upcomingSpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake, has commented on the desire to create more games based on the property. The studio had first worked on theBattle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydratedremaster that released in 2020, with it being a commercial success that helpedlay the groundwork forCosmic Shake. Both games are 3D platformers, withCosmic Shakeseeing SpongeBob and Patrick on a quest to save Bikini Bottom after a mishap involving a fortune-teller.
InSpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, players have tosave various Bikini Bottom citizenswhile traversing iconic locales and events from the show. This includes classic characters like Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Squidward in multiple settings like the Wild West, Medieval, and Stone Ages, referencing famous episodes from the show. This allows for the tone and story to remain light-hearted despite the stakes involved. Purple Lamp’s love for the property is quite evident so far, and it seems the development studio would like to continue working on games using the SpongeBob brand as well.

In an interview with Nintendo Everything,SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shakeproject directorAndreas “AJ” Jarzbek said that there were still plenty of ideas that he wished to explore withSpongeBob. He hopes that players will enjoy the upcoming release ofCosmic Shakein a few days, and that this will lead to other future games.
Cosmic Shakeis looking to take inspirationfrom not only its source show, but a number of other platformers of its kind. The game still features the same kind of exploratory and combat mechanics found in the previous entry, but offers a number of unique ideas that make it stand out in comparison to previousSpongeBobgames. Unlike the previous game,Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, the titular SpongeBob is the sole playable character inCosmic Shake.
The game is now only just a few days from release and is looking to be a rather fun and modern re-imagining of the past platformers, which is emboldened by the reprises of the original cast of actors from the series. Depending on the sales, Purple Lamp Studios could get another chance to make another wholly originalSpongeBobgame likeCosmic Shake, and maybe implement some ideas that the team wanted to include but got left on the cutting room floor. Consideringthe sales success ofBattle for Bikini Bottom’s remaster,Cosmic Shakecould potentially hit those numbers too.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shakereleases on January 31 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
