On Tuesday, Capcom officially announcedResident Evil 3after days of leaks and speculation. Anticipation for Capcom’s newest remake is high due to the positive reception of theResident Evil 2remake in early 2019, soResident Evil 3’s April 2020 release date was welcome news. But even then, excitedResident Evilfans are still looking for something more - and they may have found it. A mysteriousResident Evil 2achievement that popped up mid-November is stirring new speculation about a connecting thread between the two games.
The achievement in question is named Chasing Jill. The achievement originally cropped up in datamining in mid-November, but at the time it didn’t have a title or a task. The achievement has now changed, practically alongside the announcement ofResident Evil 3. The achievement now tasks players to “Read a letter left behind by Jill.” However, while the achievement may now seem to be ready for players to complete, so far no one’s been able to find a way to finish it. It may not yet be fully implemented.

While theChasing Jillachievement may not yet be completable inResident Evil 2, that isn’t stopping fans from speculating about what the achievement is really about. One interesting theory, in particular, is growing in popularity, as it directly connectsResident Evil 2andResident Evil 3. The theory has to do with a readable file in the Nintendo 64 version ofResident Evil 2. The file is a letter named Jill’s Note that can be found in the S.T.A.R.S. office on her desk. The text of the note happens to be Jill’s monologue from the opening ofResident Evil 3.
“It all began as an ordinary day in September. An ordinary day inRaccoon City. A City controlled by Umbrella,” is how the letter starts. It goes on to reference the ongoing events regarding Umbrella’s activities inResident Eviland the consequences inResident Evil 2. Jill explains what happened to Umbrella as a sort of karma, with those involved suffering the consequences of their own actions. The final line from Jill is rather haunting, saying, “It was Raccoon City’s Last chance… And my last chance, my last escape…”
There’s no direct evidence that Jill’s Note fromResident Evil 2on the Nintendo 64 will be the same as the Chasing Jill letter in the recentResident Evil 2remake. If it is, it’d be a great throwback to the classic release and a great way to build up excitement forResident Evil 3. Other possibilities include a new, larger DLC that starts with the letter but grows into a short story with new gameplay. Capcom will hopefully share more information soon.
