Since being rebooted in 2017, and having some of the classics remade over the past few years, theResident Evilseries is enjoying something of a boon. Even the remake ofResident Evil 3is pretty good, though it fell short of its predecessor for many. It may have dropped much of the survival aspects, but fans agree that it’s still afantastic third-person shooterwith a dedicated community. One of the things that makes the overall franchise so popular is its host of memorable characters, and sometimes the games could stand to incorporate some of the best.

That’s where modder Chiarav1 comes into the picture. A recent add-on forResident Evil 3has reinstated Chris Redfield, in which his character model takes the place of Carlos Oliveira. Nothing else appears to have been changed in terms of gameplay or story, just that Chris is now the one helping out Jill. The description on Nexus Mods says that the creator was given the idea by a friend of theirs. It also seems as though it’s still a work in progress, as there may be some notable bugs related to clipping issues and facial animations. However, it also says that it sadly isn’t compatible with the game’s latest update.

Alongside Leon Kennedy,Chris Redfield is one of the most well-knownResident Evilcharacters, starting life as one of the playable heroes in the first game all the way back in 1996. Since then, he’s been in numerous installments, includingCode Veronica, the lackluster fifth and sixth entries, right up toVillage. Seeing him make an appearance inResident Evil 3 Remakemay not make sense canonically, but it’s a nice bit of fan service for those who simply can’t get enough of the S.T.A.R.S. member.

It also shows that, despite its shortcomings, the community is still happy to mod the game, swapping out models for a more interesting experience. For example, one person created a mod thatswapped outResident Evil 3’s Nemesis tyrant for a cuddly panda. Again, the story and gameplay elements remain unchanged, but it evidently set out to take that horror edge off things slightly.

As for the game itself, it may have been a bit too short and weighed heavy on the action, butResident Evil 3was stillone of the best horror games of 2020, up there with the likes ofPhasmophobiaandThe Last of Us 2. With a remake of the fourthREgame due out next year, the series seems to be going from strength to strength, showing that continuations as well as a reimagining of the classics can work in equal measures.

Resident Evil 3is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
