With only three episodes left, and after the eight-year time jump the show just took, many will keep their eyes peeled on whether the two main leads ofHBO’sBarry, Barry Berkman and Sally Reed, will have a happy ending. Sally’s actress, Sarah Goldberg, doesn’t believe that will be possible for either of them.

Goldberg said that because their story isn’t much of a love story as much as it is a story about the two of them depending on each other to survive, she doesn’t believe thatBarry nor Reed will get a happy ending. More than that, she doesn’t believe any ofBarry’s characters deserve a happy ending.

Goldberg gave her thoughts in full in an interview withVariety. “I don’t think there’s a happily ever after for these two. I don’t think it’s ever been a love story between Barry and Sally. At worst, I’d say it’s been convenience, and at best, it’s been survival — but never a love story. There’s not really any character that has a happily ever after.” Goldberg added that because every character has a twisted moral compass, it’s hard to see anyone have a happy ending. “All the characters are so morally bankrupt, and we all walk this line the whole time, it’s challenging for anyone to be in any kind of meaningful, loving relationship when they’re constantly making the selfish choice.”

In the show’s latest episode, it appeared as though while Barry was happy with the new life he created while going on the run by living with Sally (now named Emily) and having a son to raise, Sally appeared anything but happy in her new life. Not only had she given up her dream of becoming an actress, but she also turned to alcoholism while creating some distance from her husband “John” (Barry). This got to the point where she not only almost cheated on him but strangled a perverted co-worker so intensely to the point where he had to leave the job to get away from her. The show made it clear that this was not a life that Sally wanted but ultimately chose because Barry made her feel safe.

At the end of the day, Goldberg’s right about Barry and Sally. Even though the show demonstrates that they are human, they have made selfish choices to help themselves. Barry killed people who stood in the way of the life he wanted. Sally wanted to lash out at Natalie for essentially having a better career than her as an actress. Gene Cousineau took advantage of his girlfriend’s death bytrying to turn his story with Barry into an avenueof getting the attention he craves. NoHo Hank killed his lover Cristobal when the latter refused to follow his plan. While they may not necessarily be malicious people, it’s hard to see how they could redeem themselves after what they’ve done.

However, fans should be interested in what happens next since the end ofBarry’s latest episode hinted that the show would again go through massive changes now that Barry plans to kill their former acting coach, Cousineau. This may be a ploy to get Berkman to come out of hiding, and if he gets caught, does Sally do the right thing and sell out Barry, or does she stick by the man who made her feel safe?Barrystarted the roller coaster in its final seasonwhen they killed off Cristobal Sifuentes, and seemingly, Cousineau is next. However, the show’s consistency in being unpredictable should make for one chaotic ending.

Barrywill air its final three episodes on HBO and stream them on HBO Max on Sundays.
