Soulslike games have evolved over the last decade, with many games, whether they’re triple-A or indie, taking some inspiration or being influenced by FromSoftware’s efforts. The impact thatDark Soulshas lefton the game industry and with fans cannot be ignored and is still felt a decade after its release. This has resulted in several games modeled after the Soulslike formula, such asThymesia,Nioh,Dead Cells,Code Vein, and many more. While the label can be tired out and cumbersome for some, Jon Warner, the CEO of indie developer Over The Moon, is embracing it for the studio’s upcoming action-adventure,The Last Hero Of Nostalgaia.

The Last Hero Of Nostalgaiawas announced as a part of theID@Xbox Showcase, alongside many other indie games. This game in particular is a more satirical and humorous adventure when compared to other Soulslike games currently on the market, but it will still retain the core elements that make the genre so popular. This includes hard-as-nails but fair combat, as well as a rich and complex world to explore.

The Last Hero Of Nostalgaia’s first trailer delves into the game’s narrative and setting, making it quite distinct from itsSoulslike inspirations. It details a world that is in a video game, suddenly on the precipice of collapsing due to a pixelation plague that threatens to turn its inhabitants into retro-styled versions of their former selves. It is up to the hero to save the world and restore it back to a state of high fidelity, while being jeered by the world’s inhabitants and cynical narrator.

Right off the bat,The Last Hero Of Nostalgaiais heavily leaning into being a huge affectionate parody and love letter toDark Souls. To further pay tribute toDark Souls, there’s even a boss in the trailer that bears a very similar appearance to the iconic Executioner Smough.

The Last Hero Of Nostalgaiaeven has screenshots of the character customization, but caps off the game’s satirical nature by revealing the hero to be a pixelated stick-man skeleton underneath a photorealistic set of armor. Much like other souls-like games coming out soon, fans might want to keep an eye on this one, if only for its darkly hilarious take on the Soulslike formula.

The Last Hero of Nostalgaiawill be launching 2022 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
