If there’s one thing that has helped keepThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimin the gaming limelight, it’s the dedicated modding community that keeps pumping out new projects. Even as avideo game that encourages mindfulness, fans are keen for some action and high-stakes adventures with dragons and exploration and all manner of NPCs to interact with, but the main game is not limitless. As vast as the vanilla experience is, it’s the mods that keep expanding the universe, and this new one injects that little bit more immersion to the game.

As spotted by PC Gamer, the “Say My Name” add-on created by Dan Ruta is a rather unique mod that does something likely manySkyrimfans have been hoping for. Ruta’s modification enables it so that characters will actually refer to the player by their custom chosen name. Ordinarily, NPCs would just refer to them as “Dragonborn,” but this clever take on in-game voices means that, in theory, whatever name is selected at the start, will be spoken out loud. It should be noted that this seems to only be available for the Special Edition of the game.

There are manyamazingSkyrimmodsout there, but this one seems pretty genius. A short video shows the mod in action, with a number of examples, including one player called xX_dragon_killer_420_69_Xx. It’s impressive that the NPC dialogue is able to almost seamlessly speak out this moniker. The add-on actually works through another mod called xVASynth, which is described as an AI tool that generates high-quality voices. There are a few instructions on how to actually get “Say My Name” to work for anyone who’s interested, but it seems as though it will be worth it for that extra bit of immersion, or even just to hear an NPC say a silly name rather than just calling the player Dragonborn.

This also sounds a little familiar to the robot assistantCodsworth fromFallout 4. When the game was launched back in 2015, it was discovered that the companion would actually say the player’s name out loud. Of course, this was based on whether a specific name in a database was selected at the start, which is what makes thisSkryimmod even more interesting, as it seems to speak any name. There’s even a moment during the video where a bard plays a tune in honor of one “Todd Howard.”

Not that long ago, another user created amod forSkyrimthat added new lines of dialogue for banditsby splicing already existing lines from the game. Clearly, there is the technology available to make it so that non-playable characters will be able to say the protagonist’s name, so it will be interesting to see how advanced something like this could become in the future.
