Some Familiar Demons Are Returning in SMT5: Vengeance

Some of that content has now been teased in the game’s second gameplay trailer, which Sega shared on April 5. The three-minute video confirms that the RPG’s cast of demons will expand to include Gurulu, Azazel, and Mastema, each of which was previously featured in at least two other series entries. New locations are another thing thatfans can expect fromSMT5: Vengeance, with its latest trailer featuring glimpses of a few such areas. It would seem that the game will offer fans additional opportunities to explore the regular, non-apocalyptic Tokyo.

The promotional video also appears to be teasing at least one demon that’s completely new to the series. Called Amabie, the creature can be seen around the 0:54 mark, and seems to be based on an eponymous mermaid with a beak from Japanese mythology. Curiously enough, Atlus actuallysharedthe concept art of this creature in 2021, months beforeShin Megami Tensei 5was released to critical acclaim. But the artwork itself wasn’t framed as a content teaser, having instead been attached to a message of hope in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic due to the Edo period belief that amabie can dispel sickness.

AnotherSMT5: Vengeancefeaturerevealed in the game’s second trailer concerns Nahobino, as the game’s protagonist is seen rocking a new outfit at one point in the trailer. Based on what little the video shows, it would appear that this won’t be a mere costume so much as a completely new form of the character. If that assumption is accurate, the new look will likely be tied to the game’s alternate story path, called Canon of Vengeance.

The trailer also offers another look at Yoko Hiromine, a new character that the protagonist will meet early on during the story. Her exact role in the Canon of Vengeance remains unclear. While it was initially planned to debut on June 21,SMT5: Vengeancehas recently been rescheduled for a June 14 release. Pre-orders for the game have been available since late February.
