Star Warshas been bringing back plenty of old faces lately, but now it looks like they’re also bringing an old voice back. Thanks to another upcoming season in the endlessly creative animated anthology seriesStar Wars: Visions, more filmmakers are getting a chance to strut their stuff in a galaxy far, far away. Now, it looks like one of them is enlisting the help of a trueStar Warsveteran.
Aardman Animations, one of the manynew animation studios featured inStar Wars: Visionsseason 2, is already arguably well-known for its stop-motion animation and distinctive art style. The British studio behindWallace & GromitandChicken Runhas elected to participate in the upcoming season with their own originalStar Warsstory. Focusing on young Twi’lek pilot Anni and her mother Kalina, the Aardman short is already notable for its studio, but they’ve also brought in some heavy-hitting help.

Denis Lawson, who played Rebel pilot Wedge Antilles in the originalStar Warstrilogy andThe Rise of Skywalker, is returning to the role in this short titled “I Am Your Mother,” albeit entirely in voice form. He’s a sort of hero figure to Anni, and director Magdalena Osinska wanted him specifically. “We were looking for some kind of idol that Anni would be looking up to,” she explained in an interview withEmpire. “We settled on Wedge Antilles because he fitted in terms of theStar Warsera. Also, he’s done pretty amazing things inStar Wars, but he wasn’t maybe as recognized [for it].”
Osinska isn’t wrong aboutWedge’s appearances throughoutStar Warshistory. As important as he is in various books, comics, and the non-canon Legends, he mostly keeps to the background during the films. He often would even have to duck out of a space battle early due to issues with his ship. “I think he has more lines in our film than the originalStar Warstrilogy!” Osinska continued with a laugh, probably not even joking. “We really wanted to give him the limelight he deserved.”
That’s a nice little byproduct of so manyStar Warsprojects happening lately. Past stars who may not have gotten a fair shake regularly see second chances now. From Hayden Christensen playing Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader again to Jar Jar Binks actorAhmed Best helping create his own new Jedi character, it’s always nice to see classic favorites get the love they deserve. Lawson may not have had to suffer through the abuse that Best did from toxic fans, but it’s still heartwarming to know he’s still Wedge deep down.
“I Am Your Mother” is one of the many incredibly gorgeous new shorts featured inStar Wars: Visionsseason 2. But if it’s any indication, fans are in for another collection of straight bangers. Here’s hoping it attracts enough love to keep this series going.Star Warsdeserves more outside-the-box projects like this one.
Star Wars: Visionsseason 2 will release on May 4th on Disney Plus.
