A lot of the charm for indie titleStardew Valleycomes from the colorful cast of characters that inhabit Pelican Town and the different ways that the player can interact with them. This level of charm has led to some fans making different types of art around these characters, especially for the NPCs thatplayers can marry inStardew Valley.

The latest piece of fan art centered around these characters comes from Reddit user frecklemess, who has reimagined a number ofStardew Valley’s NPCs in the style of Studio Ghibli. Additionally, the fan artist appears to want to introduce these new character portraits into the in-game experience through the thriving modding community that continues to grow online.

So far, the characters that have been given this new Studio Ghibli treatment are the twelve romance-able characters that players will usually spend the most time interacting with throughout a playthrough. In many cases these characters are primarily recolored versions of some ofStudio Ghibli’s most influential films, with the anime character acting as a surrogate for theStardew ValleyNPCs. One character who stands out specifically with this one-to-one comparison to the films is Elliot whose signature red jacket has been replaced with a red cape in the style of Howl fromHowl’s Moving Castle.

The artist has also shown intention both in the original post as well as in comments that they are currently looking for help turning these new character portraits into mods. Given the thriving community that has built aroundmodding new areas like the Moon intoStardew Valley, there are plenty of other fans who could offer help if they happen upon the request. With the progress that the artist has made on getting each of these fan-favorite characters recreated in this Studio Ghibli style, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the mod show up online soon.

Hopefully, the success of this piece on Reddit and shared across other sources of social media will get frecklemess the help they need in order to get the Studio Ghibli mod underway. Theco-operative community ofStardew Valley, both in-game and through the modding community, does have a helpful attitude when it comes to fans looking to learn how to mod. It would be interesting to see if this mod is successful enough for the artist to take this Studio Ghibli reskinning toStardew Valley’s other characters and maybe even some common items as well.

Stardew Valleyis available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
