One of Pelican Town’s more notorious quests revolves aroundStardew Valley’s resident mayor, Lewis. The existence of the shorts themselves isn’t much of a secret, since Lewis directs the player to find his “lucky shorts” that he lost somewhere in town. While the player isn’t told of their location, they are told to be discreet about the job. As it turns out, Mayor Lewis' lucky shorts are a pair of purple boxer shorts that can be found in the bedroom of Marnie, the livestock store owner. Once the player has sufficiently befriended Marnie, they can go inside and retrieve Lewis' shorts.
Why Mayor Lewis' shorts wound up in Marnie’s room sounds like one ofStardew Valley’s unsolved mysteriesat first glance, but it is only one piece of evidence that points to a solution. There is one event where, if the player follows the instructions of a secret note at a certain time of night, Lewis and Marnie will leap out of a bush and run in different directions. However, a more explicit answer comes in one Heart Event where Marnie and Lewis discuss their relationship. As it turns out, Lewis and Marnie have a secret romance unknown to the rest of the townsfolk.
It’s a mystery as to why Lewis doesn’t want to go public with his and Marnie’s relationship. Even if the playerbefriends Lewis inStardew Valley, he will never reveal their relationship. Considering that both are unmarried and in good standing with the community, exactly why this would be a problem isn’t addressed. Lewis believes that it would undermine his authority, but doesn’t explain why that would be the case. Considering that Lewis has a high opinion of his status as the mayor, Marnie’s assertion that he worries about his job too much could be true. However, this theory is never properly confirmed in-game.
Mayor Lewis' purple shorts are a joke item that opens the door to a lot of speculation when players aren’t using them to play pranks. WhileStardew Valley’s upcoming 1.6 updatecould cast more light on Lewis and Marnie’s relationship, for now players can do little but speculate with the information that they have. Lewis and Marnie’s relationship might finally get some closure, or players may learn about even more of the Mayor’s secrets. It’s surprising how a simple request could lead into one of the most unexpected storylines thatStardew Valleyhas to offer.
