Starfieldrevealed five new companionsduring theStarfieldDirect showcase, but this particular detail relates to one revealed a while back - Vasco. In the footage, it was revealed that Vasco will actually be able to say the player’s name during the playthrough. This is something Bethesda has attempted before withFallout 4’s Codsworth, although his dialogue pulled from a limited list of names that often didn’t work as intended. There is one name confirmed to be included, with Vasco greeting the player in the demo as “Captain Howard.”
It’s currently unclear how this will be implemented into the game. It could take a similar approach toFallout 4, and pick from a set of pre-recorded lines that only activate if it lines up with the player’s name. That risks having the same restrictions asFallout 4’s implementation. It’s also possible they could use AI for this feature. AfterHigh on Lifeused AI technology for voice acting, commercial releases are starting to come around to the benefits of AI.Starfieldwould certainly be the highest-profile use of the technology so far, and in this context it would make sense. Vasco is a robot companion, so Bethesda doesn’t have to achieve the variety of human voice inflections that AI can struggle with. Vasco saying the player’s name no matter what it is would make this feature incredible.
Hype forStarfieldhas now reached critical mass. Up until the Xbox Games Showcase andStarfieldDirect, there wasn’t too much promotional material for the game, with a couple of trailers here and there alongside a smaller demo. After the latest deep dive into the game, so much information has been revealed that has gamers hyped;Starfieldeven has its own “Adoring Fan” just like inOblivion. There was so much to take in from the showcase, and players will be sure to digest every second over the coming months, as the agonizing wait for the game continues.
