Summary

A strange bug seems to occur inStarfieldwhen attempting to change appearance, as one player found out their character model was switched out for a corpse when using Enhance. WhileStarfieldis considered to be the least buggy Bethesda title to release in over a decade, it still has its share of bugs. Thankfully, most of them are harmless and don’t impede gameplay by a significant amount, thoughentire cities inStarfieldhave been known to disappearfor some players in the past.

However,Starfieldhas also brought several new features to the Bethesda sandbox formula, such as the ship builder, a more refined New Game Plus, and even the ability to change appearance in the middle of a playthrough without having touse console commands inStarfield, as was the case with earlier titles such asFallout 4orSkyrim. GivenStarfield’s nature as a sci-fi setting, not only was it easy for the developers to integrate the feature within the lore, but they also allowedStarfieldplayers to thoroughly alter their look, skin tone and body type included.

That being said, it would seem that CKCartman can’t benefit from this quality-of-lifeStarfieldfeature, as whenever they attempt to change their character’s appearance, the menu screen switches out their model with that of a dead body. It remains a mystery why this bug occurs or persists in their playthrough, especially given the fact that they have yet toenter New Game Plus inStarfield. The disturbing, frozen corpse only shows up when using Enhance or console commands to enter the appearance change menu, while their character remains unaffected during regular gameplay.

While creepy and frustrating to deal with, many players couldn’t help but be amused at how bizarre the glitch appears to be. The dead body models thatStarfielduses happen to be normal NPCs “wearing” a piece of equipment that turns them into a corpse, which means that CKCartman’s character somehow temporarily equips the item after entering the appearance editor at an Enhance vendor.

Given the fact that Unofficial Patches have solved plenty of miscellaneous bugs in previous Bethesda titles, there’s a high likelihood that the disturbing corpse bug inStarfieldwill only be fixed once players get their hands onStarfield’s official modding tools, set to release in early 2024. Considering the chaotic nature of a Bethesda modding scene, there’s also an equal chance that corpses will become fully playable in the near future.

Starfieldis available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
