AsStranger Thingsproducers continue discussing who will be making a return to the fifth and final season of the ultra-popular Netflix series, Shawn Levy recently addressed all the talk about Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson making another appearance. However, beforeStranger Thingsfans get too excited, it doesn’t appear there are any special plans in the works.
Back during the Emmys, Levy quickly touched on several issues surrounding what might happen in season 5 ofStranger Things. Because Eddie Munson has become such a popular character with fans of the Netflix story, it didn’t take long for the subject to turn in his direction.

During the interview withThe Hollywood Reporterwhen walking the red carpet at the Emmys, when it came to Eddie, Levy was fairly blunt, saying that it was “highly unlikely” the character would make a return. TheStranger Thingsproducer laughed when he talked about how the people behind the Netflix show were a bit surprised at justhow popular Eddie Munson becameover the course of his one season. Levy added that he knows there are a lot of people who simply can’t fathom the idea of the series' final season not including the character in some way.
There have been plenty of fan theories out there about just how Eddie couldcome back inStranger Thingsseason 5. Some people have posited he could return as a kind of faux ally of Vecna (this would be true to the D&D story of the Mind Flayer). Other theories have him not actually making a triumphant return but serving as a kind of voice inside of Dustin’s head as the group battles with the forces of the Upside Down.
It’s certainly true thatStranger Thingshas already played with characters seemingly dying and then turning out to be alive again. Right after season 3 of the Netlfix series, a decent number of fans wereconvinced that David Harbour was donewith the show.
On the other hand,Stranger Thingsproducers allowed it to be known fairly early on that Harbour’s character had indeed found some way to make his escape. It seems that in regard to season 4, the series was far more straightforward about the fact thatEddie Munson was a one-season character. Some of that is because they clearly didn’t realize the character was going to be anywhere near as popular as he’s been. And while Levy said the idea of the leader of Hellfire Club coming back was “highly, highly unlikely,” he didn’t slam the door completely on the idea.
